Woodbury offered by Kansas?

So a kid who grew up as a huge Hawkeye fan would be an upset if he went to Iowa? Can you make an excuse for anything Iowa related?

It's a fact. Our program has been down for so long, our odds of landing a kid who has KU or UNC offers (or other top-tier programs) are slim at best, even if said recruit is from our own home state. These kids want to WIN, and a Kansas offer would be hard to turn down.

Think about it... Why go to a school that has won fewer games (probably only about 2/3 as many) in the past two years than KU wins every single year? Unless you grew up a major Hawkeye fan and have always dreamed about playing for Iowa? We haven't even been the best program in the state in the past decade.

It's not an excuse - it's reality. I will be as disappointed as anybody if Woodbury doesn't choose Iowa over KU, but I can't hold it against him.

Now if we were winning 20+ games every year like we were doing most of the 1980's and 1990's, things would be different. I would EXPECT to be keeping the top in-state players at home. But that won't happen until we start winning again.

I know this is a pipedream, BUT how sweet would it be to have the big 3 (Woodbury, Gessel, and Paige) all lured by the big dogs only to come to Iowa. They could continue to play together and would immediately turn the program around.

Maybe these guys aren't much for friends off the court, but I would have to think that would it would be a heck of a lot of fun to continue playing together and all play significant roles on a team.

Yes. I mean it. It just doesn't make sense. This state has a very small amount of kids that are high major worthy. If Iowa high major kids are basically pipe dreams at this point, why hold useless scholarships when you could be recruiting more fruitful grounds and getting in early on kids like Meyer and White who have high major ability and are not TOO GOOD to come to Iowa.

When I look at a KU bb site, they show KU having 13 offers out for 2012 bb...not including Adam Woodbury. Included are the #1 and #2 rated centers...with the #1 guy narrowed to KU,Az and UNC,who is visiting KU and is reportedly a lean to KU. He is also a 7fter.
How does KU offer 14 guys? Is it first come first serve? If Adam committed would they send the #1 center(#3overall) player who is leaning KU away?
I have to wonder if these are conditional type offers. I hope Adam is aware of all the facts here. I think he still is a Hawk but no lock, clearly.

A lot of schools throw a lot of offers out there early and take who will commit first. This allows them to finalize their classes early rather than scrambling in the spring signing period, a la Iowa. You don't have to agree with this philosophy but a lot of schools utilize it.

Also, I understand that it is hard for Iowa to compete with OSU, KU, and UNC but to make an argument that because he grew up on the west side of the state it will somehow make him go elsewhere is ridiculous.

99% of schools offer more scholarships than roster spots. From what I understand, Duke doesn't. I don't know if it's true but it takes a special program to pull it off. These offers are conditional in one way or another. Obviously a team can't take 5 centers but it's SOP to offer more than one even if they only want one.

ASU seemed to have a hundred offers on the table last year.

I actually think getting this attention from big name school is good for both him and Iowa as a school and state. For Iowa to be mentioned with UNC, KU, OSU, etc. is good. Maybe other recruits will see what Fran has going, or maybe not. Also how many years now have there been a fairly good rated player or 2 from in state? If either Iowa or ISU can begin landing some of them, recruiting will be much smoother.

Yep, ASU is notorious for throwing a ton of offers around the country. They seem to be the worst in that regard.

The problem is that everytime Iowa misses out on one, recruiting gets that much harder. All the younger guys in state get the message that Iowa is a second rate program. You know Paige is influencing Woodbury. Wouldn't be surprised to see it rub off on Gesell too. But I haven't seen enough of Gesell to know if he is one of these guys or more in the May, McCabe, and Ogelsby mold. The only vids I have seen of him show him finishing well below the rim.

All the talk about how Woodbury is a lifelong Hawk fan really means nothing when it comes down to it. Nothing against Oglesby, but he didn't exactly have the offers on the table that he could not pass up, so going to Iowa to fulfill his dream really was a no-brainer.
What will get Woodbury to Iowa is Fran and if he goes to school looking specifically for an academic program.
Here is the kicker, being a coach I help kids get looked at, one girl that ended up taking an offer is set to go into nursing. The coach said to her that it is difficult to be in the nursing program by playing her sport and that she would probably have to go an extra semester. From my understanding of the academic discussion, he suggested that she go into something else, that way she could get into all her classes and not have to worry about certain aspects of the program. That type of recruiting goes on with coaches as well. The girl did go to the school and is going to take business classes, but also some nursing classes and is hoping to finish up her nursing at a four year school and play her sport as well.

Woodbury will understand his importance to the Iowa program during his senior year. If Fran can let him feel that he is a key piece of the puzzle and given that Woodbury is a big Iowa fan, he may not follow the list of prize recruits that have abondoned Iowa. He is a smart kid and I would totally understand a chance to play on NC team, but he can be the guy that helped bring Iowa back to a top teer program. Got my fingers crossed.

For those of you who think Woodbury will be a hawk what are your thoughts on when he will commit?

I think if he doesnt announce he is going to Iowa by the end of the summer then he is most likely going somewhere else

I have no idea when he will commit. But I would be shocked if it was before the summer was over. My only thoughts are that he will commit before the early signing period.

The longer he waits only hurts Iowa recruiting efforts. What a boost for Iowa recruiting if he would commit early and send a messages to other recruits that Iowa basketball is on it's way back so get on board or be left standing at the station. I do not blame a kid for wanting to take his time on such an important decision, however if Adam already knows he is no way choosing Iowa over the Kansas's of the basketball world then he needs to tell Fran so they can focus attention elsewhere. To do otherwise would be a totally selfish act. That's if he already has decided in his own mind. There is one possible flip side that could help Iowa's recruiting if Adam drags this out. That being Iowa offering other bigs and telling them that Adam is still considering Iowa and so it's first come first served. I believe that is what Kansas is trying to do with the other centers they have preferred over Adam. Put a little fire under their rear end.

I feel good about Iowa's chances regardless who offers.

Don't you understand, Patrick!?!? Iowa needs to get "better talent" but we can't get "better talent" if someone who gives us a little brother complex offers that "talent"! It's game over when that happens! Until this staff learns to find 5* guys that no one else has ever heard of we're dead in the water! DAMMIT MAN! GET ON THE CLIFF!:D

I am hopefully as well. The law of averages says the Hawkeyes are due. Eventually another Gatens will appear and say he is an Iowa born and raised kid and wants to stay where his roots are and be loyal to his and his families favorite team. Let's hope Adam is the beginning of turning things around. Adam I know you recruits read these boards so step up to the plate Adam and be an exciting part of the turn around of you and your families favorite team. Adam tell the slick willies of the basketball world that your a Hawkeye and that they can hit the road. Let Fran then focus his efforts in other areas.

I hope he doesn't read this post. Four appearances of his first name in three sentences? That's just borderline creepy, if you ask me :D

Have to agree, BigD. We are due and it is only a matter of time under Fran. If Adam is going elsewhere, he should let Fran know as soon as possible. The other highly rated centers Kansas offered could discourage Woodbury if he is concerned about playing time. Kansas also has a Junior Center, Jeff Withby, who transfered from Arizona, who is projected to be the starting center. He had a lot of high school praise:

High School: Attended Horizon High School in San Diego, Calif... Posted per game averages of 20.8 points, 13.0 rebounds, 7.3 blocked shots and 4.1 assists as a senior while shooting 69 percent from the field... HHS went 26-5 in his senior season for coach Waheed Mitchel... A first-team 2007 Best in the West selection by the Long Beach Press-Telegram... Averaged 14.8 points and 13.0 rebounds per game as a junior in helping the Panthers reach the CIF Southern Regional Division IV championship game... Has played internationally in Germany and France... Ranked as the No. 8 center in the nation by Scout.com and ESPNU 100 and the No. 39 overall recruit on Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports Top 250.

If I were Adam Woodbury, I would be concerned about how much time would be spent on the bench. If he becomes a Hawkeye, he will get a lot of playing time and Big Ten experience for, hopefully, four years. If he is going to play in the NBA, he would certainly be noticed playing in the Big Ten, and I would imagine his draft status would be the same or as close to it as one can get.

Look how much attention and praise Melsohn has received playing for the Hawks under Fran. Would be the same for any recruit, elite or otherwise. In fact, someone might be noticed quicker than playing on a team filled with top recruits, on the floor, and on the bench. The mental and emotional stability of the State of Iowa depends on Woodbury becoming a Hawkeye.

:)
