Woodbury Nation

this is something i've toyed with in my head. kind of scary since they're our 2 true 5 players. but if you go zone with woody in the middle and allow gabe to use some of his athleticism to get out on the wing a little bit more. as soon as one gets a foul, you pull that player for a more traditional lineup.

offensively in that set i almost think you need oglesby out there for a kickout opportunity as i'd assume the offense would go through the post players.

not sure it would all work but its fun to consider

I wouldn't be shocked if we need something to work in the tournament out of desperation and we saw them both in at the same time. Could be a non-traditional surprise to throw at the other team that could spark a run.

4 out 1 in and let Woody take care of business on some post iso plays and surround him with shooters. With Fran's style he doesn't like to slow it down but if he gives Woody a couple possessions a game with that kind of offense, he would flourish. I brought this up in another thread but it was drowned by all the negative posts.

I've been a big critic of Woodbury. I said a few weeks ago he should be scoring 8-10 a game in addition to what he is already doing if he wants my approval.

But I have been quiet lately because he's been playing better the last few games... and so has Gabe.

I am quite pleased with the progress both woody and Gabe have made. I think we will be dominant in the paint next season.

It won't hurt Woody one bit for him to sit and watch Olaseni do his thing.. Fact is this Iowa team is better suited and is just flat out better with Gabe in the lineup. Woody 's time will come.

It doesn't hurt Gabe one bit to sit and watch Woodbury either. He can learn a lot about fundamentals, positioning, etc. I will never understand the either or some posters have. We need them both and Fran goes with the guy that's playing the best. Sometimes they both sit because it's someone else. We have depth. It's one of the things that makes our team unique. I like them both. I want them both on the team. I want them both to play. Why does one have to be better or worse than the other?

I'm sure this is very important to him.

I mentioned this in another thread but that awesome ally-oop in the first half to White was set up by Woodbury screening the guy that was defending White.

I saw your other post on this and was going to comment. I saw that play and immediately backed it up and told my wife to only watch Woodbury. I then backed it up again and told her to only watch Gesell. Gesell was screening the other player in the lane on that play. It was executed perfectly and like most people she only noticed the pass and the dunk the 1st time...appreciated the entire play after seeing it the 2nd and 3rd time.

The people who criticize Woodbury are the same people who expected something they weren't going to get in the first place.

I disagree. People who criticize him are negative people and negative people don't expect good things out of an incoming player. That would contradict their negative personality. I expected to see better stats out of Woody by now but I don't really have anything bad to say about him. From day one he helped transform us from a terrible defensive team to a really good one.

By the time he's a senior in think the offense runs through him and he will command double teams. Hopefully jok and ellingson can provide some outside shooting to make them pay.

I think by the time he is a junior the offense will run through Woodbury, Olesani, and White. They will have other guys that can score too, but they should be pretty powerfull on the inside.

Fran plans to play them together next year. He thought he would some this year and then other guys improved their play and it hasn't happened. I suspect the fouling is also a factor.

Also, if there was no Gabe Woody's numbers would be better. If there was no Woody Gabe's numbers would be better. Add their offensive numbers together every game and production at the 5 is of zero concern. Personally, I also like having 10 fouls available rather than 5.

Here are Gabe and Woody's combined stats.

32.2 minutes
12.3 points
9.4 rebounds
50.0 FG% (both have made 46 FGs)
71.4 FT%

That's a good way to look at it … very good production from the 5 spot. Plus we get 10 fouls as Windsor mentioned.

Woody starts and sets the tone defensively. Gabe comes in as a change of pace, and does his thing on offense. What's not to like?

Exactly, and that has to make it difficult for an opposing coach to game plan against. I am sure it doesn't help that Woodbury is left handed, the opposing center cannot focus on defending 1 certain way.

Woody is playing very well right now...so is Gabe. Fran said that Gabe prefers coming off the bench, which works well for our team. Our centers will have their work cut out for them in coming games:

1. Willams of OSU is a solid big man.
2. Morgan/Horford are good.
3. Hammons is the best 7fter in the league.
4. Vonleh of IU is a top ten pick next spring, and the best big man in the league, imo.
5. Jack/Dickerson are a good duo for PSU...Jack can shoot it from the arc, and Dickerson is a true 7fter.
6. Minny's big men duo of Elliason and Walker are huge, and playing well.
7.. Payne will return by the time Iowa goes to MSU.

No gimmes in this league, and Woody/Gabe must be ready!

I have no problem with Woody. It is my opinion that Iowa is a better team when Gabe Olaseni is on the court.

Maybe you should call Fran whenever you have a great idea. He and his staff with about 100 years of experience probably won't think of those things without your expert help.
