Woodbury Guaranteed 4 year Start

The important thing, Woody thinks he's good. All of the other players with the exception of Jok strap have no confidence.

You really think that is a good thing? He was 1-9 against UNI with 5 rebounds. He is 7 foot tall. If that is confidence you guys won't make ANY tournament.

For those that don't know, what Woodbury does out by the 3pt line is called hedging. It's when the post player slides out horizontally towards the ball handler coming off a screen, when his guy is the one that screens for the ball handler. You do this to force the ball handler further horizontally to avoid a quick guard from flying around the screen and going straight to the basket. This allows the guard that just got screened enough time to recover and get back to the ball handler.

Woodbury is actually pretty good at this. He delays the ball handler just enough and normally has good position to deny the entry pass to his man at the same time. Most of the time he recovers getting back to his man before any damage is done. He has gotten beat a few times over the years but not very often.

Gabe was awful at this a few years ago and got beat a lot if he didn't recover in time to block his man or foul. That is why he didn't play much until the last year or so when he started to figure out angles and positioning. He still gets out of position some but has improved tremendously and that's why his minutes have gone up.

What Woodbury isn't very good at is blocking shots in help defense when a teammate gets beat to the basket either with the ball or as a cutter. Gabe is clearly better at this as can be shown by his much higher percentage of blocks. That doesn't mean Woodbury is terrible at help defense though. More often than not Woody is in position and has his hands up to affect the shot. He has stopped going for blocks all the time to avoid getting in foul trouble like he did so much as a freshman.

In other words, both post players have improved but still have holes in their game that make them a great compliment to one another. As a whole, this team has been getting pretty good production from the center spot when you combine both players. I'd say 15.9 ppg and 11.6 rpg is pretty solid for just 40 combined minutes.

Well said, and Gabe has improved a lot on his hedging as you mention. Gabe's biggest issue now is how much he gets caught ball watching, he's a great shot blocker, but he chases blocks a lot and guys can cut in behind him while he's locked in on the ball handler. Gabe still gets caught out of position too much as well, Fran has also mentioned several times how vocal Woodbury is on defense.

Another poster mentioned how Gabe would be getting NBA attention if he played more minutes, that's not how it works. Counting stats are meaningless to NBA guys. If you're good enough, the NBA scouts will find you. Gabe plays in the B10, he's not hard to find.

Here is what Roy Williams did when asked how he felt recently about Woodbury choosing Iowa:

Was this right after he watched Woodbury get 11 points and 7 rebounds in Iowa's win on Roy's home court?

The problem is that when Woodbury hedges, it's particularly risky because his only way of recovering is to either deny the pass or to make it back to the paint in time to body up against his man, because he can't block shots. Gabe can afford to cheat a little more because he is not only faster, but can still block the shot if he gets beat to the rim.

The biggest problem I see (and the defensive comparison between Gabe and Woody has been excellent in this thread) with Woody is finishing around the rim (not getting stuffed by guys 6 inches shorters than him, etc) and a lack of using vertical/dunking at the rim. Woody can dunk, but does not do it enough in games. Woody could also afford to put more weight on his frame. The same could be said for Gabe. Woody has added a jump shot this year....which has been nice. But, a guy with his height has to finish around the rim and be much tougher (especially being an upperclassmen this year).

All in all, these are still good gets for Iowa. IMHO the problem still goes back to overall guard play on this team and these guys would look better if the guards were more effective offensively (shooting, feeding the post, etc). They would also look much better if this team added a true power forward (6-8-6-9 guy in the 235-240 range).

Hey, somebody who understands basketball.

I'm ready for allot more Gabe and less Woody but people who think Woody is a bad defender just don't understand what they are watching.

11 points? That was probably a career high wasn't it? No it was after the 5 points he got against UNI, the 3 points against North Florida, and the 2 points against mighty Alcorn State. Same pose every time.

Can someone explain why your seven footer, who jumps center, goes up for the jump ball with his outside hand and tries to reach over his head for the tip?

Did you know that Woodbury has played 84 games in college an has reached double figures 14 times? He scores in double figures 17% of the time. SEVENTEEN. Your guard play is horrible because they don't want to give him the ball.

The only thing I have seen Woodbury do adequately on defense is defend one-on-one in the low post. He comes out to double-team at the three-point arc way too often for somebody with his foot speed, and thus leaves the hoop undefended or leaves a forward there to guard the hoop, which usually leaves a three-point shooter open in the corner. Gabe's help defense is also infinitely better than Woodbury's. When you see the other team make an easy layup, rewind the game and pay attention to what Woodbury was doing. Gabe isn't always in position either, but he has tremendous foot speed and leaping ability that helps him recover quickly. Please tell me what you think Woodbury does better than Gabe on defense, as I would be tickled to read your response.

Frankly, I can't believe the Woodbury-colored glasses some of the fans here have. The concept of Woodbury playing better defense than Gabe is so laughable to me that I can barely take the comment seriously. Defense is what Gabe does best, and if he was getting 28-30 minutes per game, he'd have NBA teams looking at him.

Woody is hedging, but he ends up WAY to far out to recover and defend the hoop, often leading to easy hoops.

The mighty panther shows up to chirp on the Iowa message board. Probably gets a little boring over on the UNI site when all the regular posters ( all 6 of them) are out of the dorm and home in their footy PJ's or at grandmas house.

I think I spend too much time here, but I think he's here more than I am and he isn't even an Iowa fan. He must have a pathetic life to spend this much time posing as a fan on a website of a team he doesn't even like. His entire life is trying to troll here, it's sad. Reading his continuous garbage makes me wish that his mother had never been raped by her brother.

It looks very awkward, but I'll grant him this: he does win a lot of tips.
