With May's Big-Ten All-Freshman Team Selection...

May doesn't have to have "street ball" skills or ability to break down defenders off the dribble. He needs a quick first step and a solid one or two dribble drive. Improving his jumper behind the arc will help a lot as people will have to respect that more. He's also developed a bit of a mid range game as well as I've seen him one bounce and pull up from 12-15 a few times lately.

Honestly I don't know where some of you people come up with this crap.

What is May going to do with ball after he demands it? He hasn't shown any ability to beat his man off the dribble. May can only get to the rim when he has an open crease. I think he would be best served attacking the rim if was already moving off cuts or off-ball screens, and got the ball while cutting. But our offense doesn't really do that.

I think this is a correct breakdown. Having May sit there and wait for a ball screen is not using his talents. It is on Lick to use both May and Fuller better in this regard.

For this team to be even close to .500 in the Big Ten next year May is going to have to take a big step forward like Shurna did for NW this year. Gatens and Payne will just never be able to create shots consistently. Both can improve by limiting turnovers, hitting higher percentage of 3s and taking opportunities when available for quick pullups. May I believe can be a go to guy but it was frustrating watching him take 4 threes a game and an occasional 2 point basket and scoring 7-10 points every game. He will have to do much more next year.

I bet May feels silly. Apparently, being named to the frosh team is not such a good thing. I wonder what the record is for criticism for getting a post season award?

He should have tried less hard.

Is it guppies that eat their young?

Gatens needs a fade-away 12-15 footer. He would be able to create nicely if he had that shot in his arsenal.

Congrats to Eric for the honor.
I doubt very much that Eric is satisfied with his game, and would dispute anything that was said about his game on this thread. He is determined to be a good player, and knows that he needs to continue to improve his handle, and his shooting to become the kind of player he seeks to be.

As fans,we support Eric in his pursuit for excellence, and agree with him that he has much work to do to become a complete player in the mold of Adam Haluska, who also worked hard on this game every summer, every year, and did improve in every phase...which resulted in him leading the league in scoring and being 1st team all big ten.

I don't mean to rip on May, I love his game. Unfortunately he was placed on a team that needs more than just a role player. It is a complement to May that most people here think he is the most capable guy on the team to become a go-to player. I think for the team to be successful May will have to average 14-15 points a game and start creating more for his teammates. That would allow Payne and Gatens to have to do less creating which I don't think will ever be great for the team (except when Gatens gets hot). In that scenario you would also see more space for Fuller which will make him even better.

At this point, I don't see May being a go-to-guy, but to be included on the Big Ten All-Freshman team is good news.

Or it could mean that that the coaches wanted to take care of everyone, so they named a couple of Hawkeyes. There wasn't a single Iowa player in the media selections, but it makes sense that the coaches look out for each other.

Not say May doesn't deserve it, but this is kind of like every team in MLB having a player at the all-star game.

The media doesn't vote for the all-freshman team.

May is a good player with great upside. He is one of the few players on Iowa's team that has Big 10 athleticism.

It is a little odd though that May made the All Freshmen team in the Big 10 but Gilstrap didn't make the All Rookie team in the Big 12 despite averaging a double double

But they do vote for all conference teams, and no Iowa player was on any of them.

Gatens and Fuller have a lot of respect from all of the coaches in the Big Ten. In their pressers, it's almost always those two guys being talked about by the coaches. Fuller was at the top of the rebounding columns in the Big Ten, and Gatens did a lot of things well. I don't think Iowa was thrown a bone from the coaches just to get a couple players on the HM.

Even if that was so, the freshman team doesn't have anything really to do with the rest of the voting. Coaches, pick 5 guys who were the best freshman - they do that, it's done. May wasn't anonymous, so there were other he had to beat out.

C'mon spank, I am just trying to justify how Iowa could possibly get 8 wins next year in the Big Ten. I agree that right now May is not a go-to-guy. Hell most of the Iowa possessions right now he does little more than Bawinkle does. I am just trying to figure out who can be a go to wing player next year because none of the freshman will be. May I think is the most capable because I believe he has the biggest upside. May has never concentrated solely on basketball. I believe he can really improve a lot in his game. If Gatens and Payne are left trying to create for this offense next year we are in trouble.

Sorry, that wasn't directed at you, it was a carte blanche comment.

I didn't take offense, just doing everything possible in my power to not completely mail it in on Iowa basketball. It is getting harder by the day. After Thursday it might be impossible.

I'm interested to see how the staff utilizes Ben Brust. He is a weapon from outside, but can get into the lane.

RMJ brings some good hops and creation skills, but he's a couple years away, IMO.

purdue had someone on the list the last 2 years. ohio state, michigan state, and illinois have had 1. so that means they are going to stay as solid as they are now. I really hope eric can work on his handle, 3, and a nice 15 foot pull up. i think he could become great.

While this is a nice recognition, I do think the award is a little misleading. May was given the award, not necessarily because he is one of the Top 5 freshman but in large part because he had a lot more opportunity to play that other freshman. Same for Gatens.
Spot on Drew there are a lot of freshman that will surpass him when they get their time.
