Wisconsin game is the only game that matters in 2018

The Gillooly gang basically hit their camp last fall (didn't they lose most of their starting LBs?), and somehow they didn't miss a beat.

Yep...they lost Cichy (who got drafted)...and a few others. They have recruited way better than we have...but for some reason it appears we are closing the gap. I know we get over 100 yards of offense this year. In all honestly, I'm sure KF, BF and the offensive coaches have broken last year's tape down to the minutia. I have a funny feeling we are going to have a better plan this year...embarrassment stays with you a long time.

They also lost their two most experienced wideouts. Cephus ito injury, Jazz Peavy to personal issues. True freshmen stepped up to make big plays against Iowa and especially the hostile environment in Miami in the bowl game. Hornibrook grew up that night when Wisconsin needed him. Now they look like darn near a complete team.

Well...I'm concerned less with Hornibrook and more with their big ass offensive line and their big ass running back just pounding us into submission. We have size issues in the middle. Usually using smaller guys against Wisconsin lasts about a quarter...then the 2 yard gains become 5-6 yard gains...which become 10 to 12 by the end of the third quarter. And if you are Nebraska...it becomes a 70 point contest.

If we can have some semblance of an offense this season, I don't see that happening. TOP last time was brutal (Wis 38:27 - Iowa 21:33). When your defense is on the field over an entire quarter longer than your offense, you're always going to have issues.

As long as we can get something out of the O this season, along with being at home, I think we have a fighting chance against the Badgers.

They are certainly still capable of playing like that. You saw it in 2010, 2014, and last year. They couldn't get the ground game going in the Orange Bowl, fell behind in what was practically a road game, had to rely on the passing game and still found a way to make it work. And Miami was blitzing and sending pressure of the edge and up the middle. Their big ass offensive line is also more than capable of getting out in space or holding their blocks that extra half second. And the "turnover chain" paid the price.

Biggest game of the year for Iowa. No doubt about it.

Every big 10 game is bigger than ISU yet some people cant understand that. The hawks have nothing to hold back playing Wisky, need to pull out all the stops to win that one.

The hawks can beat Wisky but cant let up with any other big 10 teams. I want jNW also as they have barely skated by the hawks too many tikmes (hawks play bad against them too much also).

Agree with the first sentence, but it cannot be denied the Iowa / Iowa State game usually has a Big Ten level intensity to it and is good prep for Iowa heading into the Big Ten.

Kirk, is that you?

I know we are supposed to hate them, but I can't help but respect Wisconsin. Chryst kicks ass.
They're certainly consistent in what they do. They stay the course. I went to the Camp for the Northwestern game last year. Wisconsin had the turnover bug and were ripe to be picked. They persevered.

You see, Alvarez built a culture of trust. He always preached to stay the course when things started to go south and trust that someone would make the play and get the momentum back. Don't flinch, don't panic. Believe in each other. More often than not, it worked.

I believe trust is mother nature's original line of credit. If you have trust, you have just about everything. When egos permeate a team, one of first things to go is trust. When internal problems permeate a team, one of the first things to go is trust.

This is crazy! 3 yards on 3rd down in the last two years! There is no way that this trend will continue. Wisconsin's losses on D and an experienced QB should get the Hawkeyes going. Stopping Wisconsin's O may be another story... (Sorry if this was posted somewhere else)

And it's tough to keep their offense off the field. When they get you in third down they bring the beans. They probably force more three and outs than any team in the conference. And their offense is right back out there tiring out your own defense.

What was F**ed up about losing to Whisky last year leading up to the game was their LB's were depleted and their QB wasn't much of a passer and threw questionable passes. Well their LB's played like all Americans and that QB was passing on a rope when he wanted! I think the key to beating them is you have to have confidence and man up and put your big boy pants on and have the want to dominate the guy across from you! Let them know form the start this a 60 min game and its going to be long day. You have to break your enemies will! The 17-9 loss to me didn't look impressive unless you watched the battle in trenches. Whisky seemed to do what they wanted in the key battles. I for one don't think they have any better players than us but they have a WILL and Attitude to them and that's what Iowa needs!
For years we have bitched about the vanilla play calling and run right/left and center calls and that's Iowa that's what we do. Great do it with authority then and stick your middle finger out say stop us if you can and walk the walk!

We tried that. We have a hard time scoring more than two touchdowns on them. Either we get extremely lucky with turnovers or we get out played ever year

Their philosophy is polar opposite of ours. They get their defense off the field as quickly as possible with players who can make plays on third down and get to quarterback. Then their offense is out there again running up time of possession and wearing down the opposing defense. Our philosophy is to keep the defense out there because they might get a turnover. And our offense can't turn it over if they're not in the game. Unfortunately this wears our defense down in the fourth quarter sometimes. You saw it time and again in 2015. When we got the lead Kirk didn't even want the offense on the field. He feared the momentum swinging turnover. Bit what message does that send to your players? Kirk's philosophy almost cost us the Pitt game. Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska all hung around in the fourth quarters of games they had no business hanging around in. Those games should have been put away in the middle of the third quarter. Canzeri had 256 vs illinois, Daniels 200 vs the Gophs. We should not have been sweating out those games. Wisconsin would have known what to do. Look at some of the scores Bielema rang up from 2010-2012.

Wisconsin takes the Iowa game very, very seriously. It knows that it will be a tough game that they are going to have to slug it out in the trenches. Each player knows he needs to be position sound on every play for the team to be a success against Iowa and he knows that Iowa is most likely the competition in the West.

As good as Iowa tends to be in the trenches, Wisconsin has been a little better on both sides of the ball. Offensively, our running game has been generally stronger. The pass game hasn't always been good for either team over the last few years.

The biggest difference has been on the defensive side of the ball where our D has pretty much stuffed the Iowa O.
