Wisconsin article

Oh cool. That explains the Purdue loss last season. Ferentz and his staff are off the hook. It's not their fault!

Sweet. We're off the week after playing them this year, so we just need to crush them and it's smooth sailing.

And Iowa plays Wiscy in the last game of 2020 and 2021 too. So no hangover those years either.

Unless, of course, Iowa wins the division and advances to the CCG the following week. In which case, Iowa is pretty much screwed, I guess.

maybe all 23 losses were to OSU and UM. Unless they were against HS JV teams, they're just making themselves feel good.

There was a time when MSU, Wisconsin and Iowa were 2nd tier in the Big Ten. Then they passed Iowa by. I always imagined KF driving the Beverly hillbilly car down the highway and Danantonio and Alvarez pull up along side and then speed away.

Barry Alvarez has always enjoyed physical, hard nosed football. What he has referred to as "Coal Miners Games". And he worked his men hard in practice. Here's what's is interesting about that. His college coach Bob Devaney hated practice, let alone physical practice. "We're not on our schedule" is what he was fond of saying. Barry's former boss, Hayden Fry, had nothing against physical practices but never had the ones go against the ones. That leaves Lou Holtz, who may have influenced Barry more than any other coach. Holtz once coached under Woody Hayes and helped pass some of that physical toughness to Alvarez, who loved physical toughness to begin with. When Wisconsin played Iowa in 1999 and Ron Dayne set the rushing record they looked like a bunch of road graders going up against Tonka trucks.

As a Badger fan who does pay attention to Iowa ball (I lived in Iowa for a dozen years), I think in some ways you are off in your assessments. I still think Iowa plays down and dirty ball but it is on only one side of the ball. It's been the offense, its lack of creativity and explosiveness, that has found ways to get in the way of putting really good teams on the field.

I also wonder about its heart. I mean that in the day-in-day-out heart that it takes to win 10 games a year. A program has to go out every game with the do or die attitude and not thinking that the game's a shoe-in. That starts with the very first practice of the week. I could be wrong on this but it seems like Iowa comes out flat often and places a lot of pressure on its generally stout D.

To me, as a Badger fan, Iowa is scary because if ever you put two sides of the ball together your going to be very tough to beat. Unlike Nebraska which is a mess on both sides of the ball.

I guess, but that's the case for literally any football team at any level.

But I think his observations are pretty good. Our offense doesn't put anybody on their heels or out of their comfort zone... our D does. And while "D wins Championships", a boring O can undermine the energy and fire it takes to win. Not everybody likes to punch the time clock, some like to have more fun.

Much rather have Kirk Ferentz as head coach than that DB dantonio. Not even close.

I'd be interested in a more mobile QB after Stanley and bringing some more option elements into the offense.
