Win the toss

Super Tecmo Bowl is so much better than Tecmo Bowl. The Greg Davis 4 play playbook just totally sucks, dude. I mean, Tecmo Bowl was a quantum leap when it came out, but by the time Madden got a few releases under its belt, it was a quantum leap over Tecmo Bowl. I know this might be heresy, but Joe Montana's Football was also a superior game to Tecmo Bowl. It had the same style of side to side game play, but way more plays.
Give me Bo Jackson and a one game playbook and I’ll still hang a 20 YPC average on the board.

Nuh uh. Not even Bo was good enough to escape the defense when the defense called the right play. You might end up with 1 YPC.
Wrong answer, McFly. You could have 11 Lawrence Taylors and I’m bringin this all day.

Best athlete of my lifetime.

World class sprinter and long jumper who was on track to make the hall of fame in two professional sports before his football injury. Could probably have played in the NBA had he focused exclusively on basketball.

That is a play where the defense did not call the play. If the defense calls the play, not even Bo can break it. Especially if you are the Redskins because I think Wilbur Marshall might have been the best LB in the game.

I respected Bo and John Elway when they held out. They were both awesome baseball players and Bo got totally screwed by the Bucs. Watching Eli Manning pout when he got drafted by the Chargers was just shameful. Eli didn't have a fall back. The League ought to kick assholes like him out.

He can break it. Another play that didn’t matter was the RPO(waaaay before it’s time) with QB Eagles and Fred Barnett

In fact, Iowa seems to have a lot of 3 and outs first drive

Yeah if you are going to take the ball you need to do something with it.
Even if you pound pound pound and get 3.
You start the game wearing on their defense.
Or just score fast and put the pressure on their offense.
Either way, if you take the ball you need to accomplish something.

If I was a coach, my instinct would be to start with whatever unit is strongest. So defer if defense is the team's strength. With a potent offense, I probably elect to receive.

Get off to a good start and set the tone.

Defer or take the ball? Ferentz likes to take the ball although he has deferred a few times
If we win the toss play defense

Unless there is inclement weather, with a senior or very experienced QB always take the ball for a few reasons.
1) You assure yourself one extra offensive possession.
2) Great if you have an experienced QB who doesn't turn the ball over which plays into point #3.
3) You get first chance to control Field Position and the line of scrimmage. Especially with having a good punter to flip the field. Have trust in your team to move the chains.
4) You get first chance to get a chance to control the Time of Possession. TOP and line of scrimmage are huge for a team like Iowa.

There are certain situations where you would want to defer. Inclement weather as noted above, a young QB or a QB who may be turnover prone. If you thought your D really matched up well to stop an opposing O and pin them back right away, etc.. But, I think typically a team has a better shot taking the ball first if they are a solid team. Look at the NFL. In the NFL teams usually take if first. I presume they know what they are doing.

Interestingly enough, early on in Kirk's tenure at Iowa including his first great teams 2002 - 2005, he always took the ball first. I think there was even a record of how many times Iowa got the fall first in a row starting games. I think Patty F. at NW strategically ended it by taking the ball after winning the coin flip once.

There is a point #5 I need to add.

5) In college many teams defer first. If a team takes the ball after winning the coin toss, that team will always start with the ball if the other team defers if they would win the toss. This consistency with starting with the ball every game could really be beneficial for a team as they are used to it. This was kind of the case with the great 2002 Brad Banks team. They got the ball to start every game. I think they scored on the first drive almost every game.

Those are my thoughts.

Brian Ferentz, if you need any help, look me up!

Personally I always prefer Iowa to defer. It always feels extra good going into halftime with a lead knowing you also get the ball first in the second half. Iowa also doesn't have the best history of scoring right away when they get the ball first.

Disagree. I lay out my points ^^.

Always defer.

If you’re on your heels you get some relief afte halftime and can stop the bleeding, and if you’re rolling you get to keep rolling.

The high likelihood of taking the first kick and going three and out isn’t worth giving up the guarantee of getting the ball first in the most important half.

Always always always defer.

Dude, this ain't junior high football. Take the f'ing ball and assure yourself an extra offensive possession with the chance to control the line of scrimmage/field position and Time of Possession. Krist, this is Div 1 P5 football. You should be confident enough in your teams offense.

I think Iowa typically takes the ball for 2 reasons:
  • Other teams typically defer. Thus, no matter which team wins the toss, Iowa will typically start with the ball, so they are in a predictable situation
  • Iowa wants to get as much information as possible about what the D is doing, so they can come up with a good strategy to counter it. More info in the first half (ala an extra possession) yields better half-time adjustments. In support of this:
    • Iowa was 47th in the country last year in pts/1st half (despite almost always taking the ball first)
    • Iowa was 34th in the country last year in pts/2nd half (despite, in theory, one fewer possession; Iowa's best scoring Q was the 3rd, scoring the 21st most point in the country in 3rdQ last year despite rarely starting with the ball)
But really, this whole debate about receive/defer and with/against the wind is one of the most overblown considerations in fandom. For every valid reason you come up with to go one way, there is an equally valid reason to go the other.

Bottom line: each team starts one half with the ball, and each team gets 2Q with the wind, and 2Q against. To think the order that those things occur matters greatly is just silly, and most arguments rest solely on a few anecdotal instances that stand out prominently in each of our minds.

Haha I played at least 2000 hrs of Tecmo Super Bowl when I was a kid, one of my fav games of all time. Me and some friends would each pick anywhere from 1-4 teams and play through the entire season over and over. I moved to PC shortly after that phase so never really got into Madden though. NFL 2k1 on Dreamcast was underrated!

Nah I've broken several touchdowns over the years with a called play, you'd have to get really lucky though

Bro haha not even close. There's so many better LBs in Tecmo Super Bowl. I was going to say he's not even top 30 and I had to look it up. This site has Wilbur barely top 50: Link

Lol.

The "extra possession" thing is a load of shit. You get that possession no matter what; it's just a matter of which half you get it in. So there's zero advantage to the number of total possessions.

If you win a coin toss you are winning the right to decide when your one and only guaranteed possession is. Do you want it right away when the game is still a blank slate, or do you want it after half of the game has been played and you have felt out the other team's scheme, evaluated your own failures/successes, etc.??? I know I'd rather make decisions with a whole 1st and 2nd quarter's worth of information.

You want to score first??? See below. Listed in that spreadsheet is every Iowa conference and bowl game, in order, from 2015-2018. You can see that in 40 games, only 8 have resulted in an offensive score on the first drive. And only 3 times in those 40 games did Iowa score. Feel free to check my work.

Both teams are getting one guaranteed possession per game. Being able to use it when you might need to stop an opponent's momentum or keep your own going is huge.
