Willies Gone....again

This is the number one problem with an iron clad contract. You answer to no one.

I am tired of middle fingers to the fan base. I do not care what it costs - move on.

You guys can say what you want about him being a quiter and all that goes with it. The fact is it was clear to most he had plenty of talent. Iowalaw is spot on with the assembly it's just Kirk getting further out of touch with the players. He prefers the a&@ kisser over the talented one. Can't wait for Vandy to stretch the field next year, cause he can pop the top off the D... Sick and tired of Kirk and the archaic totalitarian ways....

Those aren't mutually exclusive. He has plenty of talent, AND he's a quitter.

I don't know a quality coach in the country that wouldn't have placed some conditions on the return of a player in this situation. That Derrick is moving on might be because KF was unreasonable, or it might be because KF was reasonable and Derrick didn't like it. You don't know, and I don't know. But I do know a lot of people made the same accusations about KF's "out of touch" treatment of DJK, until DJK was arrested.

And no, before some maroon starts typing an angry retort, I'm not comparing DJK's pharmaceutical career to DW in any way. For all my criticisms of KF's coaching, he has been remarkably consistent in his handling of off-field issues (and quitting the team mid-season qualifies).

Not a real surprise here. Would have loved to see things work out and Willies stick with the Hawkeyes but he probably realized the smart play was to move on.

Well hopefully Derrick learned the valuable life lesson that Kirk was trying to teach him throughout this whole thing.

"Some maroon?" Did you just get through watching some old Bugs Bunny cartoons?:)

The argument that this is KFs fault makes no sense, as does the notion that some kid who quit mid season should get the benefit of the doubt over KF. Nobody knows what was expected from him in order to return but I doubt it was unfair. KF doesn't exactly have a long history of being cruel and having former players speak ill of him. Just because you're unhappy with his results on the field doesn't make what you wish were true, true. I'm as tired of mediocre football as anygody else but that doesn't make me some blind Willies supporter just because the narrative fits so conveniently into what everybody projects onto KF.

When Willies originally quit he had people close to him tweeting that it wasn't about family problems but about playing time. I have no idea what went down, but i bet he was given the terms of his return and they made him unhappy. Big deal. These kids that leave Iowa almost never do anything ever again, which generally makes me think they suffer from an inflated view of their own abilities. Maybe he can go play FB at Southern Illinois, or RB at Morningside.

This idea that he only quit to be closer to his father and that Ferentz wouldn't let him back on the team for that choice alone is incredibly naive. You are likely a stupid person if you think this was all that happened, and that Kirk would be so heartless and arrogant when he himself balled on national TV after his own father passed.

Would be interesting if CJ and Derrick transferred to the same school: Iowa's former QB using his rocket arm throwing TD bombs to the Hawkeyes' fastest ex wide receiver.

Well said. This isn't KF fault, he has dealt with players wanting to leave before in outstanding fashion (Both Pat Angerer and LTP have said they walked into his office to quit). I'm sure there are dozens more examples of this, that we have never heard of. Since I do not know what was said behind closed doors, I will just assume that the man who has dealt with these situations well over the past 16 years did so again this time, and like all of these situations the ball is ultimately in the players (Willies) court. If he wasn't willing to go through what KF required him to in order to be in good standing again on the team after quitting mid season, then that is Willies choice. I'm not going to blast him for his choice, but it is obvious he wanted to move on when he quit, so it is on him to prove to KF that he really wants to stay.....which he decided not to do.

Now the people that work there tails off every day, are coachable, do everything the coach asks of them, show up on time every day are a@@ kissers? The things i mentioned above, i know for a fact that Willies didnt do each and every day.

We will never know the whole story on this as Kirk will not share it. Look at many of the others that have left the team and he takes the high road every time. If you think this is all about Willies dad being sick, then you are missing big parts of the story.

i am curious if Kirk brought this to the team or at least leaders of the team and asked them if they wanted him back. If he indeed did that, did they want him back? I can't answer my own question

Glad he's gone...again.

The kid is a quitter. He left the team in the middle of the season when they needed him. He said it's because of his dad, others said it was because he was mad he didn't get enough playing time. I'm going to lean towards the fact he didn't get enough playing time.

He was lucky Kirk even gave him the chance to get back on the team.

A lot of "If"s in these posts, meaning most people, like me, don't know the circumstances around this announcement. However, he was a talent, and the Hawks could use talent next year. That I do know.
