Will Northwestern = Duke?

Is Chris Collins building a little Duke at NW? Obviously NW is not on the same level as Duke or have the storied history at this point, hell they just got into their 1st NCAA and got their first win last night, But, the two institutions are eerily similar with both being private universities and relatively small with 14,000 and 20,000 students. Both known for higher learning.

Will Collins be the next Krisrterwewespi and build a formidable team at NW like Kristeresespi did at Duke? Will we still be watching Collin's NW teams in the NCAA 30 yrs from now. Just curious.

I will hang up and listen.

Coach K is 70... wonder if Collins would ever go back to Duke at some point or if another program with a better tradition would entice Collins to leave Northwestern.

I think the cart might be just a LITTLE too far in front of the horse here. Lets keep this in perspective, they have 1 NCAA win in the history of the program.

The interesting thing about this and the reason I am asking is that he is from the Chicago area so I was wondering if he would be content at NW if he could build a program similar to Duke. I think he may be one to want to stick around the Chicago area, but I don't know him for sure. That is what could keep him at NW if he has continued success and why NW could potentially turn into a Duke type situation, but maybe on a bit smaller scale.

This is not being entertained because of the NCAA and/or the win, not at all. This is more based on the success he's had at turning around NW and more the success they had this season. He's built it and they've gotten better each year so the foundation is set, now we'll see what happens if he's able to bring in even higher rated recruits.

I'm just say'in he's building something nice at NW and maybe a lot of what they do or the way they play comes from the Duke background/influence. I'm looking weeeeeell down the road at the possibility, not putting them on that level now.

That's a nice vision for him to sell the admin when he asks for a new arena. (NWestern's sports facilities are weak).
As for taking over for Coach K, he'd seem to be a good fit, but those are big shoes to fill.

It has the makings of a good gig. If he could control Chicago he wouldn't have to leave the city much to recruit.

I saw him get interviewed in Welsch-Ryan Arena. It looked to be quite odd but cool in a way. Kind of neat seeing the old gyms/arenas, kind of Hoosier movie-like. It was weird because the sides accomodated the length's of the gym. The ends of the court were at the side of the gym (shorter distance), so like the court ran the opposite way in the arena that one would think. Nice design so the side fans can see a better view and more of them. The seats went way up the sides.

I was sure somebody would point out the similarities between W-R and Cameron indoor. For bball, a quirky smaller arena can be a home court advantage.

Collins clearly is a good coach and he's building something good there, but this is obviously all way premature.. He was an assistant under Coach K so obviously Northwestern will become the next Duke, right?

It won't be any coincidence if NW resembles Duke in terms of style, the way Collins runs his program, etc. etc. being a coach K disciple and all, but becoming competitive and becoming ELITE are two completely different things.. I think we're finding that out with Fran. It didn't take him too long to make us respectable again and get us back to the dance, but taking that next step is pretty difficult. That's why I kinda scoffed at that recent Schwartz article talking about us getting to the Final Four in a few years, etc. Future is bright for sure but it's not so easy to get to that level. I digress, though.

I see what you did there!

But actually, Cameron's cool because the goals hand down from the ceiling and there is absolutely no obstructing watching from the ends of the court. It's an old gym as well.

Yeah, I'd think the job could eventually be his to lose... If he wants it. I agree he'd be a good fit, but I couldn't blame him if he didn't want to step into coach K's shadow at Duke, either.

Well, they all have to start somewhere. Nobody gets to "Elite" status without being "Unelite" first. Was Penn St football Elite before Paterno? Duke had sporadic success before Krysessesspi but he brought consistency and got them to be the elite status.

Just pointing out the similarities between the two jobs, universities and have heard Collins really likes being in the Chicago area. Just wondering if he could be there a long time, and if is, would it turn into something similar to Duke. That's all. I realize the odds are long, but now he seems to have the foundation layed and could get high recruits to compliment. That's all.

I think Collins will have a career much like Fitzgerald in football. To build NW into something like Duke is highly unlikely. There are a lot of blueblood schools that haven't got what Duke has.If Calipari can't do it at Kentucky I don't think it can be done at NW. I'm not saying it can't be done but Collins would need to commit to staying for 30 years and what some colleges will pay for coaches doesn't lend itself to long term commitment.

He stated publicly that he doesn't want to follow Coach K. Privately that could be a different matter I don't know. The rumor is that Duke will probably make a hard run at Brad Stevens once Coach K retires.
