WILL IOWA START A HOCKEY PROGRAM?

I think that is the plan. I thought I hears that somewhere. Not sure, but looking forward to when they do.
Should be a lot of talent to pull from the USHL.

It might help us when we go to Michigan State. I figure if we can forecheck a bit more, we can get to the other end of the court more easily and have room to operate. We need to hammer them when they are near the boards.

I'd love it, but where would they play? The club team plays at Coral Ridge, but that's not really a suitable venue for D-1 play. I can't believe that they'd be able to put it in Carver, so they're likely looking at a pretty steep bill to build a new arena if they want to add hockey.

Would love to see it, but the stadium question would need to be answered. Also, with the equality thing, they would almost need to start up a women's team along with the men's team.

If they did it would be both for men and women. But the lack of a facilities is the biggest hurdle.

Some reason this is in the basketball forum? That aside, Iowa is a not a big hockey state. Can't imagine this does anything but loses money. Also, if you start a men's team you need to start a women's team.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. There's a lot of hockey in the state.

I would love for Iowa to start a hockey program...I would think they would need to build a hockey only arena out by the hall of fame...and that's big money...so not sure it will ever happen...but man it would be cool.

PSU just did it, and their arena is amazing too.

Would we have to add a women's hockey team? There are already more women's sports than men's.

Men:
1. Baseball
2. Basketball
3. Country
4. Football
5. Golf
6. Gymnastics
7. Swimming & Diving
8. Tennis
9. Track & Field
10. Wrestling

Womens:
1. Basketball
2. X-Country
3. Field Hockey
4. Golf
5. Gymnastics
6. Rowing
7. Soccer
8. Softball
9. Swimming & Diving
10. Tennis
11. Track & Field
12 Volleyball

So the women already have 2 more sports than the men. Or is it not about the number of sports, but rather the number of scholarships, and since Football's roster is so huge, that's why the women need the extra sports?

Has Iowa annexed part of MinneCanada? I am opposed to Iowa adding any athletic teams right now because I have a really bad feeling that we're in a bubble period for TV revenues and something is going happen to harm that. Sure, the department typically runs a nice little surplus right now, but that is predicated on football "donations" and shared Big Ten TV revenue. I get that it's tempting for a government body to see a pile of money and immediately come up with ways to burn it in flush times, but this is a cash pile that can dwindle pretty quickly and we sure don't need to add another costly capital project and dozens of more mouths to feed in two new hockey programs.

i never said that we need a hockey program. It would be great, but its not going to happen.

Cedar Rapids is a big hockey town. Iowa hockey would put butts in seats. They could play at the CR ice arena until they get a proper facility. Sell out every game I'm sure. It doesn't hold too many people.

I think its based off of number of participants and not programs.

Take the old football bubble outta storage, purchase a zamboni, and head out to lake McBride and slap it all together. Build it Barta, they will come.

I very much doubt there would be much interest from a hockey ignorant fan base to see a fledgling Hawkeye hockey program get smoked by the likes of the badgers and gophers every night (which i assure you would happen for years to come). Plus the no arena and womens equity question makes this a non starter.

PS, Baudette MN is a bigger hockey town than Cedar Rapids is.
