And I agree with that. However, they have become more high profile recently. Sitting out bowl games was a new phenomenon for football. I could see it happening in basketball at the college level as well.
Have you noticed the NBA teams 'resting' players more often now? Started with Popovich and the Spurs and now happens regularly throughout the season. Never happened in the old days. It's a new way of looking at sports (baseball team limiting innings pitched during the season, hockey teams playing 2 goalies more often). It's not necessarily about injuries - fatigue is being addressed proactively.
That's a different story, even baseball gives players rest during a 162 game season and I wouldn't be surprised to see more teams using 6 man rotations. Playing a 82 game schedule in the NBA is much more taxing on the body than a 30 game college schedule.
I can see why top football players choose to skip meaningless bowl games, I don't see it in basketball. If I'm wrong you are more than welcome to tell me "I told you so!"
