Will Iowa pay for the CBI?

Iowa needs the postseason games no matter where they are, and I'm starting to think that they aren't going to make the NIT. They could get a few home games in the CBI, and they can even tell Jok that he doesn't have to play and he can start getting ready for NBA combines. But the kids need games, against anyone, anywhere, in any tournament.
Don't they have a summer trip this year?

There's a difference between playing a real college trying to beat you where every game could be your last, and playing Bermuda Int'l HS when you're just trying to not be too hung over from the night before.

Agree that we NEED to play in it, if it's offered. I do believe you have to PAY to play it. But money well spent for development of program. Plus, a way to possibly get more 'wins'---may be only way to get to 20 again. Glad to see that other Power Conf teams have participated. Just don't want to be the first, or only one to have done so. Hopefully Fran believes that also and lobbys for it, if offered.

I think that would have been a perfect time to admit you were wrong and move on...
I think it would be a better time to admit, nobody gives a shart about the CBI tournament and Iowa will NEVER EVER be a part of it. If you hate Iowa bb so much that you need to start threads constantly putting the team down in snarky back handed ways, then find another team to root for. (not meaning you specifically)

Agreed. I think we will make the NIT. I guess I could see a potential scenario where Iowa accepts an invitation to the CBI and plays in it without Jok, to get experience for our young players, but that is pure speculation.

Interesting thought. With football players skipping bowl games, I wonder if basketball players may skip playing in lower level tournaments like the NIT and CBI in the future.

No where near as much risk playing basketball.

True. But, couldn't you see a player like Jok, who is struggling with back issues, not wanting to play and get hurt worse or make a bad showing that would not be good for some NBA team to see? It won't happen for the NCAA tournament, but I could see it for one of the lower level tourneys.

No, not in basketball. If he is healthy enough to play he will want to showcase his talents in a post season tournament. Again, this isn't football where 1 hit can end your career. Granted career ending injuries can happen in basketball but they are very rare.

Pay to play? Clinton foundation? :D

I say no, two or three more games aren't going to make much difference to these kids anyways. What good would it do to be playing lower level teams? Maybe tonight you just got a taste of what life without Joc is going to look like.

See Embiid, Joel. Only cost him a couple spots in the draft, but he missed 2 years waiting to play. Now, he is crushing it in the NBA and represents 'the process'. Also, see Simmons, Ben. Basically blew off his spring at LSU and then got injured and still hasn't played in the NBA (he will be soon).

It's happening more and more and I could see agents saying not to take any chances. It may not happen with a player at Jok's level who needs exposure.

Thanks for finding examples but I never said injuries don't happen, they are more rare in basketball than football.

And I agree with that. However, they have become more high profile recently. Sitting out bowl games was a new phenomenon for football. I could see it happening in basketball at the college level as well.

Have you noticed the NBA teams 'resting' players more often now? Started with Popovich and the Spurs and now happens regularly throughout the season. Never happened in the old days. It's a new way of looking at sports (baseball team limiting innings pitched during the season, hockey teams playing 2 goalies more often). It's not necessarily about injuries - fatigue is being addressed proactively.
