Will Iowa Football Ever Loose It's Mojo?

Why is everyone comparing Iowa to schools that have national cache. Most of those other schools mentioned in this thread can afford to hit and miss til they get it right. Iowa can't. 70,585 becomes 60,585 in a blink of an eye, people nowadays don't need much of an excuse not to go to games anymore.

Notre Dame has not been relevant in 20 years and they still get guys like Charlie Wiess or Brian Kelly to come in and think they will be the savior. A 3 year dip by Iowa from a bad hire and it becomes the Fran McCfraffrey hire 'the best of what is available'.

Just look at the '99 hiring process. Exclude Stoops and Elliot, Sonny Lubrick was the highest profiled serious candidate for the job. Ty Willingham turned down an interview would not even listen....Effin Ty Willingham.

I think the reference to the "national" programs is to emhpasize that if it can happen to them, it could be even worse for us since we are not traditionally thought of by outsiders as a "national" program.

Your point about the 99 hiring process is a good one. We got pretty darn lucky, in my opinion.

I'm not comparing them or putting Iowa on the same level with these schools. I'm actually doing the opposite & stating why they are different. I was just stating why a well known coach could find Iowa appetizing to coach at. I merely stated reason a coach would be interested coaching at Iowa. Facilities with less pressure & paid pretty good $$ at a school like Iowa.

Okay, i get it now a brand new fancy practice facility was the reason why SA/TL were not good fits here.

Until the mid 90's you had 15,500 at Carver on a pretty regular basis.

If we are going to compare basketball post TD to football post KF we need to include all the facts, just not one’s that fit our argument. I agree that both programs had similar winning traditions going back at least 20 years, but that’s where the similarities really end.

The current football program receives national exposure and $$$ through broadcast deals with the Big10 Network, ESPN, and ABC. The basketball program post TD was broadcast throughout Iowa using local affiliates with occasional games picked up by ESPN and ESPN2 (then in it’s infancy).

The current football program has state of the art practice facilities, one of the best weight/training rooms in the nation, and new locker rooms inside a renovated and historic Kinnick stadium. The basketball program post TD had no dedicated training/weight facility and had to fight for practice time with the women’s basketball and women’s volleyball team.

Iowa football is entering it’s second year of record demand for tickets to it’s product. Iowa basketball drew solid attendance numbers for a long time, but attendance was waning as TD’s tenure came to a close, not by much mind you, but those paying attention could notice it.

The FACT is if Iowa football would wake up tomorrow needing a new coach they would be in a much better position than Iowa basketball was when they were looking for a replacement for Tom Davis.

I suppose one could say they lost their "mojo" from 1998-2000 when the team struggled. They did have some nice recruits but Iowa football was at it's lowest point that I can remember that 1st year Ferentz took over.

Unless Ferentz leaves for some weird reason in the near future I think the Hawkeyes are safe.

They didn't have crap for talent those years. These were definitely the worst years for me as a fan in my lifetime. As a fan, that 2000 team went into a game & you know they didn't have a chance in #ell of pulling a win out. There was no resemblence whatsoever of a passing game. None at all. They were completely one-dimensional & not very good at that one dimension.

It was horrible as a fan.

Just brutal I tell you, just BRUTAL!!
