Will hawks spy on McCaffrey with a Cash player?

Frost has a bit of a conundrum on his hands picking a starting QB. McCaffrey is a better runner, but as the Illinois game proved, is a very limited passer. At his postgame presser, Frost bemoaned the inability of McC to hit wide-open WRs on deep throws. This was evident a couple times when McC was rolling out/improvising that he had WRs breaking free along the sideline for a long TD and he threw the ball 5 yds out-of-bounds. Martinez may be the better choice because altho he is a turnover machine, he has a much better chance of completing passes down the field. Frost will review the Penn St. tape and see that Iowa was able to bottle up Levis (who's a run-first QB), but that their passing QB found gaps in Iowa's pass coverage. I wouldn't be surprised if Martinez started, and McC was brought in with a package of specific run/option plays for him -- or vice versa with McC starting and then Martinez brought in with specific set of pass plays to run. Either way, Iowa's defense is not a great balm for a struggling offense.

To answer the original question, yes, I would absolutely put a spy on BOTH Martinez and McC every play -- they can both hurt you badly with their legs...much moreso than their arms. A standard 4 person DLine rush with a spy will get the job done.

Listen, McCaffery was already showing the wear and tear late in the Illinois game. You can't have a guy who has to throw the ball, taking that many hits. Phil will game plan to make sure McCaffery doesn't get running lanes...I'm sure he will break a few, but he's going to take some punishment.

20 carries in the 1st half against Illinois. If he has 20 in the first half against the Hawks, he will not make it to the 2nd half.

Or Nixon. Call it Slaughtergate

Or Merriweather...or Koerner...or Niemann...or Campbell/Benson...or Van Valkenburg...or Gholston...a lot of landmines out there if McCaffery plans on keeping the ball a couple dozen times during the game.

This needs to be one of those games where the Hawks make Nebraska quit. They did that in '17, but they let Nebbie keep it close the last 2 years. This year needs to be a submission.

Yeah I don't want them hanging around either. Do like we did against MN and frustrate the crap out of them. Getup 2 or 3 scores early and burry them. Getting up early like that just changes how they'll coach it too. We play so much better up 2 scores (captain obvious here but still) The way our D just forces you to take what we give you and be patient with moving the ball. Most teams just can't put together 8 plus play drives. They aren't built that way.

It’ll be interesting in terms of who they start at QB. Nebraska fans don’t want Martinez again, or at least that‘s what their boards are saying, but I agree that he gives them more options on offense in terms of throwing the ball. But he’s not exactly a pinpoint passer, either.

Likely will see them both and they both run so hopefully we will be more preprared for the running QB this game

Campbell is going to be a stud. We sort of could have used him in our two losses.

And there it is. Post 10K. Can't wait for the next 10,000. I don't have a twitter account and seldom use Facebook. This is my social media outlet. It's a blast corresponding with posters old and new!

McCaffery is not as big as Martinez and I predict somebody lays a really big hit on him that changes his attitude on running. Probably Belton.

Frosty still hasn't figured it out... you can't have a QB running that much in the B1G. He'll get crushed.

In listening to the talking heads over here, i live in enemy territory, it sounds like they're expecting Martinez to start but expect a lot, a lot of packages involving McCaffrey because everyone knows he's the team best playmaker. Wouldn't be surprised to see them both in the game a lot during this one, with McCaffrey playing the part of the rb.
