Will Ferentz Contract Extension Lead to Brian's Future HC at Iowa?

Amid the extension for Kirk, does this move signal Brian moving to an Associate Head Coach in the future and then to Head Coach once his dad retires? When I look at Brian, I see a Bob Stoops like demeanor/clone. Iowa could do a whole lot worse than keeping it in the family. Granted, there is some time for this all to take place, but what say you on Brian's Hawkeye head coaching career....

If KF does stay the head coach for 10 more years that gives Brian F the chance to be a FCS or other smaller program head coach for a few years and then come back as fulltime OC and asst head coach. KF did this move when he went to Maine in the late 1980s.

I think that is the best possible scenario for Iowa football. Whether or not that happens is anyone's guess. Transitions from one coach to the next often kills mid-level programs like Iowa (we've seen it kill blue blood programs too) so having Brian as Associate HC with the plan in place that he takes over for KF when he retires would be great.

However, if KF tanks and fans turn on him again (its happened before) who knows how things will go.

If this is the case, I'd like to see Brian have A few years as a coordinator in the the NFL or better yet at a big time college program, before he comes back to IC. Too much inbreeding can't be good. I'd love to see him as an o-coordinator under a nick Saban or urban meyer or even someone like Tom Herman, to really see how a top program is run from the ground up, and hopefully bring the nuts and bolts back to Iowa.

This is another reason why a big buyout is a terrible idea for the University's sake this late in KF's tenure.

Let's say 5 years from now, KF is ready to ride off into the sunset having finished up a great last 5 years. He'd have 5 years left on his contract that will pay out 100% of about $5.2M year or $26M. That's a heckuva bargaining chip to come to Barta or whomever the AD is and says, "I'll give up half the buyout in exchange for naming Brian as the new HC."

My guess right now is that the following will happen:

1) Greg Davis retires in the next 2 or 3 seasons
2) KF promotes BF to O coordinator
3) KF retires early with a "handshake agreement" that BF will be named his successor.

That would have BF as the head coach within 6-8 years.

The other option is BF goes to the NFL and then comes back once KF is done. I think I like this option better

I'm assuming if KF is the one who decides to retire early he forfeits the remaining money on the contract. Retiring early and Buyouts are two completely separate deals.

I have been thinking about this today, and I think this is what is going to happen. Davis will step down in a couple years, and BF will be the new OC. Then a few years after that KF steps down if Brian is hired as his successor. I think KF wanted the buyout to make sure this is what happens, and I'm sure Barta is OK with Kirk and Brian figuring out the exact year in which this happens.

I agree with the BF as OC and have thought that for awhile. Also feel that, whenever Brain and Kurt feel the time is right, KF will retire and Brain will be the brians behind the operation.

Actually that's not a bad long-term transition plan. At a minimum Brian would have to get some OC, DC or HC experience and most importantly deliver on that role for the pieces to fall in to place. As with any vacancy, timing is everything. The other wild card that is impossible to predict is who else might be available at the time for an AD to consider (Stoops, BB, etc.)
