Why the Ferentz Era is at an end

Why can't an article like this be published in the mainstream local media so fellow alums like Aunt Betty and Uncle Joe, who have a voice &/or money and are content with whatever is shown in front of them, can have the dots connected for them before they throw more $ at the problem and not the solution?

I published this today around 8am. By 10:45pm, it had been viewed over 216,000 times, making it, without question, the most viewed piece of content in this history of this site or anything I have been a part of in 15 years. And knowing a thing or two about page views and circulation, I'd say this is one of the most viewed Iowa Hawkeye related content items every produced by a 'media' entity who covers the Hawkeyes...meaning paper, website, etc. What's more, this site generally has over 100,000 unique visitors per month. Pretty solid. Today, well over 200,000..in just one day, also the most ever. The website has had around 400K page views just today, making it the biggest day for anything I have been a part of since the Blake Larsen commits to Iowa day back at SuperHawkeye.com...the site got around 1mil hits then, but it was pretty much the only show on the interwebs at that time...there weren't four or five options, there was pretty much one, and then HawkTalkOnline as a forum only.

I am pretty much astounded by this....so no, it was not published by the mainstream media, but its been read by people in 115 countries and over 200,000 times in less than 14 hours.

When Barta said the criticisms are at an all time high, or something like that, yeah, I buy it.

^^^^^^^^^^That is AWESOME to hear^^^^^^^^^^(What Jon said)

Hopefully it continues to get viewed and passed around...for the sake of the last 35 years of the Hawk football program, we need a fresh slate that will interject MASSIVE excitement back into our team and school...why prolong the inevitable if the handwriting is on the wall? Jon and others (including Fortune Mag) have shown how the contract can be "covered" with negligible financial loss...

I wish for KF's legacy to be left as favorable as we all viewed him 10 years ago. That legacy remains marginal at best now, and it just does not appear to be enough there for his legacy to go no where but lower from here on out. He has done the university well, but the results of the past decade speak volumes. We have tried "tweaks" that are not and will not pan out, and it is time...It only takes ONE "right" individual to see, hear, or confirm certain data and for them to have that one "right" conversation with only ONE other "right" person to make change happen!

PS...If all 216,000 of those views had the same inclination...that is only $70 a head to buyout the contract in 1 swoop! ;)

Thank you Jon. The heat needs to be turned up so high that Barta is forced to do something.

All of which pretty much proves what's been known about human nature for eons... negative bomb throwing and sensationalist headlines will always draw more readers/viewers. No great mystery there.

Unfortunately, Ferentz is like a king who has no clue what is going on outside the castle. If you listen to him, he is oblivious. He has a kiss butt athletic director telling him that the program is going in the right direction, a fat paycheck, and is treated like a God. He is not going anywhere, as he feels he can do no wrong. Hell, he can donate .0001% of his salary to charity and the folks on this board think he's the most generous man alive.

From 1992-1994, Hayden has 3 straight seasons under .500, and there was a little heat, but nothing like we are seeing now.
1997 was a disappointment, but we looked very dominant in the wins that season, and almost beat the #1 team in the country.
By comparison, 2014, we looked dominant in 1 game and struggled in the other 12.

No one was predicting 3-8 in 1998, but there were some warnings with the 7-0 halftime lead on Central Michigan (we won 38-0), but the 27-9 loss to Iowa State stunned everyone in Kinnick. It was like the Undertaker losing at Wrestlemania.

This time around, many are predicting 5 or 6 wins with one of the easiest schedules in 2015.

Most of it has to do with the contract. If Kirk was making $2M, since the contract extension, there would be heat, but not amped up, like it is.

Agree with everything but your comment about the 2M. The money always matters but for me he is worth every penny of 4M if we were playing good football and competing with the Wisconsin's and MSU's of the world. I do not have over the top expectations of natuonal titles either. If he was making 2M today I would feel the same way.

The troubling things to me are personnel decisions, recruiting dip, in-game decision making issues and overall lack of energy/sense of urgency to address problems.

Part of me cannot blame KF if he is just out of gas after 16 years. Understandable but I do not want to see us back at 1-4 wins a year either and I think we are dangerously close to that.

I was in edit mode and meant to delete the contract comments.
Yes, even at $2M, there would be still be outrage. The $4M just take it another level.

We are in an era, where it will be rare to see a coach stay at the same school for more than 10 years.
Stoops, Beamer and Ferentz all seem to be running out of gas.

The next coach with the longest tenure, since 2000?
Gary Patterson of TCU.

Then, Mark Richt (George) and Gary Pinkel (Missouri), both hired in 2001.
George O'Leary (UCF) in 2004.

After that, every other D1 coach was hired in 2005 and later.

Coming out of the break with latest at Iowa... Very interesting. Will get to a bunch of SEC staffs after
They said that Kirk might step down and part ways, but probably won't happen.
So, in essence, nothing new.

Would be a win-win classy move....

KF gets a bunch of dough and can take a year or two away, and then take on some new program and try his hand with a fresh start. He may even do well in that scenario... The most important thing would be his legacy at Iowa would still be very golden and even more revered for his action.

For Iowa, we get a fresh start, safe enough bread to go get a real self starter big time coach....and we can still keep KF in our hearts for the many previous good things he's done for the university.

I can't imagine that really transpiring, but then I couldn't imagine going 7-6 this year either.

Pretty confident when I say "mainstream" local media isn't the 800lb gorilla it used to be.

Newspapers? A dying entity. I personally get 95% of my daily information, locally and nationally, from the internet. A trend for sure.

TV and Radio? Not the right medium for this sort of discussion.

The internet and solid forums like this is where it's at...where info can be read, re-read and discussed. In 2015, the internet is certainly the established mainstream gorilla.

This is similar to when a great athlete stays past his prime. It's tough to look inwardly and realize it's time to get out. One keeps thinking to the past, when they were on top of the world and think they can continue/repeat that level of performance.

Only it's a dream...things change, other fresher legs are passing you by. No discredit to what you've accomplished. None at all. But that was yester-year.

Others clearly see it...the individual rarely does. By hanging on, you're only embarrassing yourself and the program/team you're associated with.

Leaving with one's dignity intact is worth more in a short lifetime than any paycheck and will certainly last a lot longer.
