Why RPI?

Iowa was the highest ranked team (29) not to get in by Sagarin Rating and they don't take into effect margain of victory. In turn it rewards teams that do well against opponents. Iowa's sch. strength was a (63) while St.Marys was ranked (34) with a sch. strength of (120). Also why have a committee if all they do for at large was to just take the top RPI teams in order without really looking into it.

Great points, cubbieman. What happened to the rhetoric about looking at all available data? Saragin, Kenpom, BPI...you'd think the format of a selection committee would lend itself well to vigorous debate.

As you say, might as well assign the at-large bids based on RPI.

Even though the committee said they look at other polls besides the RPI if there is a large difference, they clearly do not put much stock in anything BUT the RPI. Iowa had about a 50 spot difference between their RPI and Sagarin/Pomeroy.... Didn't matter.

A monkey could select the field of 68 if RPI is all they are looking at. Talk about lazy bracketing.

Bottom line: I hope Fran knows how to work the RPI and starts doing that next year. Or figures out how.

Fran said it himself, that he scheduled an easy non-con for the benefit of the young players. Whether you buy it or not is up to you, but that's the story. Word is that the schedule will be better next year.

Fran could have scheduled an EASY non-conference schedule that had teams with higher RPI rankings. Live and learn... Although this is something that Iowa should have known for decades now.

Just look at the MWC. Easy schedules, much higher RPIs, with playing crap teams.

Middle Tenn ST played 4, let me repeat, 4 games against teams in the top 100. From December 13th on the highest rated RPI they played was, wait for it.......105. Thats worse than Nebraska's. They finished with an RPI of 28. Meanwhile Iowa played 11 games against the top 40 RPI in that same time frame yet they finished 79th because they only won 3 of them. Middle Tenn ST's best win was on Dec 8th at home against Ole Miss. Their next best win the entire season was Central FL who came in at 103.

I'll state it this way. Iowa could have played Florida and lost by 20. Played a few other decent teams and lost to them as well. Beat Ole Miss at home. Then played Nebraska, Penn St and Northwestern every Big ten game and finished with an RPI of 28.

really don't know how you can argue with this - just is flat out wrong to decide things like they are.
