Why not Iowa vs NIU Game thread

Jok looked better shooting than I've seen anyone look on 2 strait possessions. Very smooth when he's confident. He needs to be confident more often.

Jok is a jump shooter. Fran needs to get him in that role and we need it. Forget the other stuff he is trying to do.

Ok Jok and Dickerson both did some good things to hopefully build on. We need them badly this year. Maybe Ellingson will somehow be the lights out 3 pointer we need.

Quick take aways:
Post players keep up the energy and don't be afraid to spot up from within 16 ft.
Guards, need to get confident. Seems like Sapp is the only one bringing it consistently. Jok looked good towards the end when he got in a groove. I have always been a Gesell fan but it seems like from last year him and Clemmons switches attitudes. Oglesby showed he can do it but needs to get his feet under him and go through his motions. Dickerson is quick but plays at only one speed, blazin' fast. Fran needs to let him play through some mistakes.

I agree. But I do think he might be more than that before he's done here. He has shown some pretty good burst taking it to the hole. Just can't finish when he gets there.

A few thoughts..
Clemmons..great to see him bouncing back after a tough season last year. He won't keep up his 3pt % but our best guard so far this season.
Utoff.. rough night shooting but nice to see him fill it up in other ways. Moved the ball well and hit the boards.
Woody..double figures in 4 of 5 games. 5+ rebounds in all of them. looks sustainable.
Mike G.. rough start to the year. I think he gets it sorted though. too smart not to.
Gabe.. did gabe things. avoided some of the mental lapses.

I'd like to see Jok/Trey/Dom get a bit more run but right now the core group needs the court time to mesh and figure out who they are before Big Ten play.

McCaffery just said that Gabe Olaseni's dad passed away this morning. Gabe decided to play. He is working out plans to go back to England for a few days for the funeral and be with family. Condolences to Gabe and family.

To bad for Gabe and his entire family. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

When Gabe got pulled at the end of the game, several players went over and said something to him. Coach Fran actually rubbed him on the head. Looked strange at the time, but makes sense now... unfortunately

Regarding the game, I will give MG credit for one thing. Even when he struggles on offense, he still works hard and is solid on D.

Condolences to Gabe. He's an ocean away and that's got to be tough.

Couple of things...and it's been said, Jok's defense needs to improve big time. That being said, I'm watching him and when he wants to he can play defense...but it's for like 10 seconds. I think there is some ADD going on there. I watched him early in a few possessions and he's got energy, appears focused and after about 15 seconds he relaxes and he's late getting out to guard the three...and naturally, the guy nails it. I saw him do that twice when he was in there. Defense is about attitude and you play the ENTIRE possession.

He's a guy that can get Gatens hot in my opinion, but he needs to be on the floor to develop that confidence. His defense is going to keep him off it. We need him badly on the offensive end, so I hope the light goes on.

Gesell is the best defensive player on the team. He's also the worst finisher on the offensive end. Fran needs to gear him into the defensive minded, assist oriented player who is looking to get his teammates shots. I hope his shot comes around, but it just doesn't look good right now...so he should be looking to create more, rather than hoist all the time. His shot is a mystery to me...I hope he gets some consistency there.

Jok and Oglesby look great when they are confident. There is definitely a difference in their shots when they shoot it with confidence. You can tell when its going in and when it's not by their stroke. I think Jok is more of a jump shooter tho when he develops. Right now yes he is a jump shooter. He still lacks the quickness and it seems the game is still just fast for him physically and mentally right now. Once he gets comfortable and gets some quickness and experience I think he can be a big time scorer. Like a Tyler Haws at BYU. Maybe not as well as Haws does it but same type of game. Great mid range game, can drive it, and a good outside stroke.

I definitely noticed those 2 possessions. It's easy to forget how good a shooter Jok is because he's been so awkward in other areas. But that shot is so smooth it doesn't even look like he's shooting.

Judging by how Fran is substituting, he'd really like Jok to be the 8th man in the rotation. If Gabe does leave for a time to be with his family, the Longwood game could be a chance to get Jok the PT he needs to get comfortable out there.
