Why is Iowa cursed with the opposing team 3 Ball?

Forget who shot Kennedy, or where Hoffa is buried for a minute. Why does any team who likes the 3 ball looks all world against us. Every freaking time.

Well this current team stinks so I think you have to throw out the data from this team as it will just muddy the results.

I think Iowa should play more man to man. They are having a hell of a time locating the shooters.

Really!? They're having trouble locating shooters in man defense too. The Hawks need players to actually become seniors, otherwise (no matter the talent) they'll struggle. Not enough leadership and that is all.

Got to have the athletes for one, be able to switch or hedge correctly, or fight like a mother through screens. It also helps if you have a shot blocking presence if you want to pressure the ball outside in case you get beat. Basabe has some of this ability.

Communication when you switch or hedge, which doesn't seem like they do very well. ISU killed the hawks in transition when they spotted up for 3 on the break.

I think this will get much better when Fran gets his recruits in. Right now though it's very painful to watch.

I think at some point you have to give up the thought that every other team seems to just have the game of their life shooting the 3 against us, and just believe that this team REALLY struggles in defending the 3 point shot. A decent division 1 player should be able to hit 50% on uncontested wide open threes where they can set their feet, and I can think of plenty of examples from today alone where Michigan had uncontested wide open shots.

It's not really a curse, they just really lack at defending the perimeter.

In M2M D, they get beat and have to help, leaving the shooters open.
In zone, opposing players just pass and slash through it, leaving the shooters open.

Is there any particular style of zone or man we could play that would give us more of an advantage? Extend our zone cover out like they do at Syracuse? Or, is the answer simply flush the Lick guys and get better recruits?

Probably both huh.

Numerous reasons: 1. teams do not fear us or respect the Hawkeyes, they play loose and know they have more talent, next yr hopefully will be different. 2. The hawks are undersized and struggle to clog up the middle and shut down the paint, we have to sag and double down which opens up the perimeter. 3. we are not very athletic on the perimeter but we are getting better at closeouts, Ohio State and Purdue are very quick and athletic and can overplay and dare the offense to beat them off the dribble, we are not there yet. Hopefully we will be better by this time next yr if we can find an athletic big that can block shots and get some double doubles, everyone else will get better overnight, can you imagine if we could find a johnson(Purdue) and stick him on the this team.

Well Michigan is younger than Iowa and they seemed to handle things well!

I love the young excuse all the time. If every player brought it like Basabe and Cartwright then things would be closer. Yes young players make mistakes but not all mistakes are just due to youth. Iowa just has some bad players, accept it and move on. Let's hope Fran can get talent in ASAP....

I have said it many times, it might be necessary to get another JUCO kid like Cartwright.

This...

I would call it a curse if Iowa had a hand in the defender's face. Iowa's D sucks.

Cartwright and Basabe are the only two reasonably quick twitch type players. May is athletic, but it is more of a football athleticism. It is not a first step athleticism.

Basically, you have a whole team of guys with a slow first step. That is bad for perimeter D.

I question how much defense is practiced. Even Lick's teams had better perimeter defense. I know Iowa is undermanned just about every night, but how many times has an opponent hit more than 7 or 8 threes in a game?

Lick's teams also had a consistent rebounder. This team doesn't. Tate and Fuller were guys that you could count on to get boards on a consistent basis, which limits an opponent's possessions (and also decreases the chances of finding an open shooter on the perimiter). Basabe can have a big night, and then other nights he gets next to nothing. Cole and Brommer, same story.

Thats like saying why so many tornados in the midwest. Luck is not a strategy or game plan. This is a trend not a curse.

The best answer is that our on the ball defense sucks. Even in a zone. The guards break us down off the dribble, we don't help/rotate correctly, they hit the open man and boom another 3.

It seems like Cartwright is having trouble keeping his man in front of him, which is one reason why there is a lot of open shooters. Maybe he's just playing too many minutes.

I think a lot of it is the when a post man tries to screen our defender on the point guard and our post man steps out and tries to double team on the point. Then, no one rotates fast enough and it leaves at least one outside shooter wide open.
