Why is Connor taking a scholarship?

Actually, Williams is reportedly close to 6'-7". So, yeah, I am aware. But Williams is a kid you "can" play pg. Conner is a kid who "could" play pg. They are both 2g's, in my opinion. Don't you think that is why Fran is spending so much time trying to find a true pg? My point is that having Connor on scholly wouldn't be a bad thing because he isn't the point guard of the future that would scare away other pg's, down the road.

Connor is much more of a PG than Williams. Connor is only being labled a combo guard because of his height and because he can play the 1-2, but he is a distributor before anything else; translation he's a 1.
Williams is definitely not a point, but we have nobody else on the roster who could play the position other than spot minutes for Bohannon next year, and maybe Moss.

This is spot on minus the Moss part, he's not a PG at all

BG, I've re-worded my post cuz it came across snippy the first time. That wasn't my intent. I'm (shhhh) at work, so typing fast. Anyway, I was really trying to speak to the thread title of why Conner will be on, is taking up, a scholarship. I think Connor's role will be more 2g, but you could likely be right that he plays some pg, also. But, in my opinion, that only happens if we can't land a true pg in the next cycle or two. But if we do, then having Moss, Daily, Connor and maybe Williams sharing the 2/3 spots (all at 6'-6" or taller) give great flexibility and 4 good scorers on the wing. But if we don't land a true pg, they you are probably closer to right.

Only his senior year, similar to McDermott

The point I'm making is that we shouldn't have to stop recruiting or not be able to offers guys like Malik Williams because we're out of scholarships. Anytime that happens during Connor's 4 years at Iowa and given it's a high profile 4/5* recruit Connor should become a walk on for that year. Fran can afford it.

I'd agree with this take. I'd much rather have a Yogi Ferrel type at the point who can break down a defense that a Connor and Williams aren't quick enough to able to do. However, we haven't had a PG like that in some time, but yes ideally Connor/Williams would play the 2 because we'd have recruited a quicker PG.

Sure that could be done. But I don't think you hold it against Fran if that isn't what happens. If would be a strategic thing to do, but I don't think it should be their standard.

Hey, remember when two 6'5 PGs led their teams to the final four last year. There both at the combine this week with a decent chance to get drafted. I bet there schools wished they had "true PGs" last year.

There aren't two 6'5 PGs from last year in this years NBA Draft... But yea, there are exceptions, especially when you play on a team who is a FF contender...

Isaiah Cousins - 6'4.5 yesterday with shoes.

Micheal Gbinje - 6'6.75 yesterday with shoes.

Gotcha. When You said last year I assumed 2015.
I mean obviously you'd prefer a bigger PG as long as he has PG traits.
Those two guys are good athletes, better than Connor or Williams who wouldn't have the lateral quickness to stay in front of quicker guards or be able to break down a defense. When we've matched up against quick PG's we've been torched off the dribble lately, and been unable to create offensively because our guards couldn't create space. Connor and Williams height is definitely advantageous, but I'm not sure it makes up for lateral quickness.

I'm not very high on Connor as a PG, or really as a prospect for the matter. I just get so sick of the we need a true PG line. We just need a good PG, doesn't matter what they are built like. As much as I like MG, I really think he held us back the last few years.

I think Connor is going to be a really good PG.

Definitely.
I've seen Connor play 3-4 times and he's never played well, and sometimes almost go unnoticed but some 247 Scout was raving about him a couple weeks ago, saying he'd make an instant impact as a freshman. He's obviously gathered the attention of other scouts as well to be top 100 and 4* recruit.

Nike, I'll speak for myself. I don't care if your next true pg is built like Herman Munster or Magic Johnson. Both are unlikely, though. It isn't body type, it is ability. MG and Sapp had the body types. But, true pg ability tends to come in shorter individuals.

Just my opinion at this point. The scouts and recruiting sites get paid to do it, so I can't really argue with others who have high expectations for the kid.

One of those top dog recruits wants to come to Iowa, Fran will have Conner walk on. I'm sure Fran's contract calls for him to make more $ with certain landmarks accomplishments such as making it so far in the NCAAs. Making it further would more than compensate for paying for his sons tuition and bringing in talent helps him accomplish those landmarks.

Unless you are Fran, his wife, or their financial advisor I suggest you keep from making the financial decisions for them.

ConMac earned the right to receive a scholly, thanks to his hard work and talents; and you think he should turn down this because "his daddy can afford it"!?!?!

What kind of a deek goes around making these kinds of assumptions/decisions for their people!?

Just for reference for next time; what is the annual income for a parent to disqualify their child from receiving a scholarship? Thanks in advance.

I find it interesting that Williams and Conner Mac are already too slow, lack lateral quickness, can't beat someone off the dribble, are not "true" point guards, etc. when they have hardly played in front of the crowd of posters on HN. Maybe we would be wise to let Coach Fran define what is meant by a "true point guard." Of course, you and and I are entitled to our opinions, but I think I will hold judgement for awhile.

As to whether or not Conner should receive a scholarship, in my view, if he earns it, he gets it. Does not matter who his dad or mom might be. To those who oppose him getting a scholarship, as Lew Holtz would famously say, "I could agree with you but then we would both be wrong."
