Why is Connor taking a scholarship?

Couldn't he just walk on? I'm sure his dad can afford the tuition. Or is there some rule that prevents Fran from paying a players tuition?

That would free up a scholarship.

He deserves a scholarship and you don't play 13 guys. There will be at least 1, probably 2 guys that will transfer out after this season and scholarships won't be an issue

This will probably be the case, but if not, I imagine Fran & Connor will be open to walking on if the right recruit can be had.

Connor on scholarship makes for a good sales pitch to a recruit. Fran can say "We feel you are such an important recruit for Iowa that I'll pull a scholarship from my own son to have you sign".

Plus in today's college basketball scholarships always open up. By this time next year, maybe someone decides that minutes will not be available so will transfer, similar to Fleming this spring. Or maybe Jones' knee doesn't recover and he needs to hang up his basketball career.

This subject has already been beat around the bush on here already. There was a mixed reaction to the topic. Some felt it was ok to give one to him and some felt it should be used to bring in a additional player. The entitlement people were very vocal.

Entitlement? Yes, the people with a lot of money who think they are entitled to all that life offers. The entitlement poor who thinks the same thing. Personally my family (my wife and I) are in the top 25% of all wage earners in this country. I don't say that to brag but to qualify what I am about to say.

I personally feel that the reason for scholarships was created to help a gifted athlete or gifted student who could not afford college if it weren't for the scholarship. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I can't help but side for those who have struggled in life and finally get a break in life through outstanding efforts in the classroom, on an athletic field, or some other gifted trait such as art or music.

Fran should pass on the scholarship and pay his sons way. I just put my daughter through A prestigious college for four years and my son is now a freshmen at that same college. Although I do ok financially I in no way make the kind of money Fran does. He can pony up. I am sure his son will not feel the slightest offense at that. Now that's my opinion take it for what it's worth. Now if their is no one gifted athletically out there that Fran can get with that added scholarship then give it to his son under those circumstances. I find it very difficult to believe there is not some deserving youngman out there who would be a great addition to the team.

This. Connor will get a scholarship, someday. It maybe 2017. It maybe 2019. It maybe 2018 & 2020. Or it may be all 4 years.

Connor is a serious competitor and wants to win, just like his pa. If he could forgive his scholarship for a year or two to bring in a great player, I guarantee you that he would in a second.

Say a top 150 player decides he wants to commit to Iowa, maybe a Tyger Campbell, and we have no available scholarships. Do you think that Connor would give up his scholarship for a year to bring in a player that would improve the team and their chances of winning?? Heck yes!

Let's hope that happens.

It's not a done deal that he is or isn't yet.. Far from it. That said he'll get no grief from me if he does. Because he'll have earned it and could get one from many other schools too. He would get credit from me if say he does walk on and then pays his tuition back later through a loan like every other regular kid. But if his Dad pays for it so what he's a multi millionaire. I don't think there's a wrong way for this to go. It's Frans program and he and his son have put themselves in a position where he can play college ball and attend school for free if they'd like. Good for them.

If he's a good player (good enough to start/play on a D1 team in a power conference), shouldn't we just be happy that he's going to play for Iowa?

This will probably be the base. However, better players than Connor have been walk ons. Including player of the year Doug McDermott.

I guess I don't feel strongly one way or the other on this topic. Conner is a high enough rated recruit that he's earned the scholarship but if Fran/Conner decide to use it in a different way, that's on them.

We know Fran is in a position that he can afford it but if he could bring in a recruit that can contribute, it may be more of an "investment" opportunity for Fran.

Fran has the incentives in his contract based on performance so if adding another player can help him achieve more of these incentives, he may actually make more back than the cost of Conner's tuition.

Very misleading post using McDermott. He was a walk-on his very last season at Creighton and only due to the fact that Grant Gibbs was granted an extra year via medical hardship and no longer had a scholly.

If Connor's good enough for a scholly that's good enough for me.

Bryce Alford was a walk on.

You do realize Williams is 6'6 and will be our starting PG right? Also, Marble played point and was 6'6...

Actually, Williams is reportedly close to 6'-7". I am aware of his height. But Williams is a kid you "can" play pg. Conner is a kid who "could" play pg. They are both 2g's, in my opinion. That is why Fran is spending so much time trying to find a true pg. My point is that having Connor on scholly wouldn't be a bad thing because he isn't the point guard of the future that would scare away other pg's, down the road.
