Some Iowa players play outside of themselves. They don't let the game come to them, they try to make the proverbial play that brings CHA down.
Players that play outside of their abilities. (1) McCabe (maybe 'cause Fran keeps putting him into a position to fail). (2) Marble. You can count on Marble taking the shot to either win or lose the game for Iowa. Invariably, Marble misses. IMO, Marble isn't a go-to-guy when the pressure is on the line for Iowa. Make Marble a decoy. Let the other team bring all their players in to guard Marble while he passes the ball to a wide open teammate and gets the assist. Unfortunately, this action is, IMO, outside of Marble's character, 'cause he likes to hog the ball in pressure situations. I wonder if those assists in big plays would damage Marble's psyche. Maybe that's too harsh of an assessment of Marble, but that would make Iowa a more successful team. (3) Uthoff's outside shot has been poor lately, so he's tried the inside. Uthoff gets stuffed on the inside. (4) Basabe (maybe 'cause Fran keeps putting him into a position to fail). (5) Oglesby. His outside shot, while desperately needed, is becoming erratic. Are opponents cringing when Oglesby shoots, or are they starting their fast break?
White has learned to play within himself. He drives to the basket and takes the occasional outside shot when the opponent isn't guarding him at all. The two centers have learned to play within themselves... The centers need to be in the game as much as possible. Gesell and Clemmons play within themselves.
Then there's the head coach. He puts some players in that causes Iowa to fail, and he gets those temper tantrum technicals.
Oh, oh, and the free throw shooting is horrendous..
