Why does CJ get a pass with everyone?

Like everyone else I was pumped to see where CJ could take the team this year. Yes, we were weak at receiver when Vande went down but Smith had a lot of potential as well as some of the younger guys. Plus we had a more than adequate OL and very strong running backs.

So why the horrible offensive production? You can blame the coaches but they've been here the last 5 years. There's got to be more to it! To me, CJ looked as bad in the latter part of this year as any QB I've seen at Iowa (and I've been watching since the 60's). Did he lose the team? Does that explain the poor pass protection, i.e. lack of effort by the OL? He really looked lost out there and had zero ability to avoid a rush. He was even missing screens and swing passes. Maybe next year we'll find out what the problem really was?

He was bad but no way he lost the team. The pass blocking was equally bad all of last year as it was this year. It's not like there was a tipping point where they quit blocking for him.

If there were some Lols in your post, I would think you were someone else.

CJ leaves with an uneven legacy

0-2 in bowls he started. 0-4 in bowls he played in

0-1 in CCG

7-1 in regular season trophy games as a starter
1 division championship

I think he played his heart out and as best as he could. Limited mobility.

It was interesting in the bowl game Monday when he got chased and pushed out of bounds to the ground in the Iowa bench area and none of the reserves on the sideline helped him up, did he lose some of his teammates??

I'm still not convinced he was ever healthy to begin with this season. He used his legs far less, and while he may have been coached up to not do so, when he did run something was still off.

How many games did he play in his career where he was 100% healthy? I guess we'll never know, but I don't think more than a couple.

Got sidetracked with a new family to take care of. Just a theory. That and he was never physically the same after last year.

Completely agree, can't believe this point seems to be ignored by most people. I have a 3 year old and a 3 month old. Having a new baby or a pending new baby on the way is a life changing and obviously a stressful experience, especially if you are unmarried college student and the pregnancy was most likely unplanned. This whole thing is a huge distraction.

It's ok to blame it all on his lack of production as a matter of fact. No excuses, these factors all contributed to a poor season.

1. Child/personal life
2. Lack of receiving weapons
3. GD coaching/scheme
4. Physical health
5. Offensive line inconsistency
6. Lack of qb read skills/technique
7. Last but not least lack of hope. Couldn't you just see it? He certainly has the arm and leadership ability. But it was clear that he was frustrated and defeated by all of the above. Any one of the above could affect a qb's game, for CJB, they all did this year.

I think CJ is a victim of the same thing as every multi-year starter under KFz... a complete lack of quarterback coaching and weak offensive strategy. I also think he's been playing hurt nearly all the time.

I'm pretty sure he got sidetracked by the lack of protection. My god, did you people watch the games we lost...our offensive line struggled with pass protection all year...and I know some of that was on the TE's and backs too. He literally had 1.3 seconds to throw against Michigan. Throw in that you have no WR in the program that can get separation or make plays...fact. Did we complete a pass to a WR against Florida? I know some of that may be on the offensive scheme and game plan but protection was an issue all year.

Personally, I think giving this line the Joe Moore Award was a joke. They were great in run blocking most of the time and two 1000 rushers is unprecedented in Iowa History, but last time I looked, protecting the QB was part of their responsibility...and it was inconsistent at best. The 2002 O-Line group deserved it, the 2008 group was better than this group by far (Greene with 100 yards in every game with a new QB) and every defense gameplanning to stop one guy. That group lost 4 very close games...and they gave Stanzi time to throw in most games, and KF cost them one game by starting Christianson.

Up until recently, I thought he was a better QB than Jake Rudock but now I'm not so sure. He has a stronger arm and quicker release, yes, but Rudock was superior in reading defenses, knowing where the ball should go, and sensing blitzes.

The guy was hurt, all you have to do is watch videos from both years on his release. Even in the bowl game he had to wind up and throw.

The real problem is the system doesn't get capable back ups ready. Any criticism of CJ is just plain dumb. Not many Iowa players over the year played their guts out as much as CJ. KF is the guy you should be upset with.
