Why are we not seeing Derrick Mitchell?

To me Mitchell is one of those players that has a very good all around game such as a Jack of all Trades. Didn't they want to put him at receiver once? He's kind of solid all around but unfortunately I think there are players who beat him out at every position such as Wadley and Daniels at RB. He's just never found his niche to be the go to guy but is so valuable as he does multiple things well such as receive, hence, why they put him out wide. He's still a weapon and I think they will find creative ways to use him as the year goes on.

I never viewed him as a top notch RB though, as I often see him get stuffed at the LOS. He doesn't have the shiftiness that Wadley does and I wouldn't compare him to Ronnie Harmon. IMO, he also doesn't have the power/size skillset of Daniels. He's kind of between both, IMO. Still a decent athlete but just beaten out at every position by a tad. Still a valuable player, though. He's just one of those odd players that really never found a true fit.

BTW, I just saw Mitchell on crutches and Wadley with his right leg elevated, his knee wrapped in ice, just now outside of the football complex as I arrived for the weekly press conference.

Good job, guys.

You serious!! Hopefully just precautionary with Wadley. Not sure what happened to Mitchell. He wasn't hurt Saturday night was he? Practice?

Mitchell's good but how many 3rd string RB's see a lot of playing time? The last thing I want to see is us use him like we did last year and let everyone know we're passing.

I am not sure I would call him third string, but definitely the third option.

I like Mitchell, but most of the snaps he takes are going to take away snaps from Daniels and Wadley. As long as both of those guys are healthy, they should be getting most of the snaps.

He came here as a receiver and was running with the receivers until they decided to use him on scout team to emulate Melvin Gordon prior to the Wisconsin game. He did such a good job (and with the lack of depth at the time at RB) they decided to move him to RB. It was a good move in my opinion.

Well he's been rested. In 2 games - 2 carries and 2 catches according to ESPN. That's ********

In the words of KF, that's football.

He'll get his touches and screen passes and other trickery. It's only been through Week 2, cant give all the weapons away on film...

Yep he did play a lot more and they were wasted snaps that should have gone to Wadley or Daniels. And everyone knows we are going to pass when he is in there.
He normally in is on 3rd and long, so EVERYONE knows we are going to pass, run draw or screen no matter WHOS in there. He is quite effective in his role to be able to run draw, screens, or come out of the backfield.Would having Wadley in on 3rd and 13 'confuse' the defense?

Yeah, giving him at least 3-4 handoffs would keep the D guessing when he's in. He's been very effective running in the past. Had the 200 yard game last season.

Good job, guys.

There are two things that could've prevented that

1)
Less Mitchell . . .

2) and more vvvvvvvvv

I wish I was trolling you. That's seriously what I saw. Akrum said he's OK. Kirk said he's fine and that RBs get dinged.

Mitchell looked worse off. He was trying to walk to see if it hurt. He stopped after a few steps and got back on the crutches.

These guys have top-notch medical care and I'm sure he's getting great treatment. It's only Tuesday so who knows how he'll feel in the next few days.

Kirk did not mention him by name but did not rule out anybody medically for this week.

3rd string and 3rd option are pretty synonymous wouldn't you say?

Actually, the way that Iowa likes to use a two+ back rotation I would say that LD and Wadley are the first string and DMX and Toks are second string. I would venture that if the poop hit the fan, a healthy DMX gets the nod over Toks in meaningful game time snaps. But with DMX hobbling on crutches this may not be the case anymore.

Also, I have a hard time calling anyone who is playing the second offensive snap of the game (injuries withstanding) third string.

Yes Wadley wouldn't tip the defense off as much as Mr 3rd and Long ... Wadley is a much better option as is Daniels. Wadley is getting it done running and catching the ball. Both are a whole lot quicker Mitchell = tooooo sloooowwwww..
