Why after nearly every game people want......

To get rid of or rips one or more players out of-
Gatens (he's new this year to abuse, used to be he could do no wrong)
May (see Gatens)
Marble (soon he way move into Basabe and Cartwright territory)
Brommer (favorite whipping boy)
Archie (whatever he plays is either too much or not enough)
McCabe (see Brommer)

Cole has been relatively ammune to criticism despite underwhelming performances until the last couple of games.

Basabe and Cartright have been given a free pass for much of the year, though early on there were those savants that wondered why Cartwright was playing at all (even with Payne injured).

Do you watch the games? Im not saying I think we should run off anyone but all the guys you mentioned give people plenty of reasons to

I guess I would ask for people to be realistic and realize that we have players playing out of position, playing larger roles or being asked to do things their talent level and/or experience won't allow. Being critical is one thing, but it can be done without over-the-top statements and childish attacks. If all of that is too much to ask then I stand corrected.

Because people are idiots that don't know the difference between a paid professional and someone barely out of high school.

I dont really like to bash players, but i can understand why we sometimes overreact(myself included). The freshman def need a break but guys like Brommer who have been out of HS for three years now, need to play smarter.

I don't know why anyone consumes themeselves with this topic. Not ripping you, but if it were alive back in 1987, you would have seen fans blaming players back when Iowa went 30 and 5 in Mr. Davis's first year. Heck, fans were ripping Ricky Stanzi a couple years ago when he helped guide Iowa to a top 5 ranking before being injured. It's just the way it's been and always will be.

Or people are tired of being a cellar dwellar in the big ten and hearing from the lunatic fringe Iowa fans why we need more Iowa 3A talent not capable of playing in the big ten. At some point the sentimental value of having a roster full of Iowa high school kids has to give way to the reality of the current state of Iowa basketball. We are not good, have not been good, and despite an amazing effort by McCaffrey and staff, there isn't enough talent on this team.

The biggest problem in this debate is perspective. You have some Iowa fans that are obsessed with offering every in state kid that can dribble with both hands and shoot 3's. Others recognize that we need players with 1 on 1 skills that most in state kids don't have because of the style of game played in Iowa. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when every BTN announcer basically says "Fran doesn't have his players", I will leave it up to you to read between the lines.

I love getting the best in-state recruits if they are worthy. The only in-state player I thought was good enough to play in the Big Ten was Gatens but he has been less than adverstised over the past years. People say Iowa High School basketball is getting better and better, which is true over all, but there is usually only one player a year good enough to be a good DI player. We have a lot of guys that should be playing at UNI and Drake, not Iowa.

Heck, Drake got the best recruit last year in Rayvonte Rice. I think Fran can spot talent, and I hope he can get the best in-state recruit each year just to have a local kid and when he brings in better talent it will help those kids like Gatens or May look a lot better.

It is very simple. We have one or two players that are Big Ten caliber. We are a very bad team. We lack just about everything. These close games mean almost nothing. Look at ISU.

That being said, I think Fran can turn this around but next year will probably be much of the same. He needs a little time to bring in his type of players.

Excellent post. I will speak for myself and say that my frustration is not really with the players, but with poor evaluation by Lick and Company when they were recruited. You put a kid in the big ten who should be playing in The Valley and unless they are a true diamond in the rough, they are going to struggle. You roll the dice on one kid and he doesn't pan out, no big deal. Unfortunately we have 3-4 kids that are playing a level or two above their athletic abilities.

The Hawkeyes were bound to struggle this year with a new coach and a bunch of young players. That and there is not a bad team in the conference this year.

Should be a good dance though for the big ten this year.

Go Hawks!!!!

Ripping players is weak.

Every stable minded Iowa fan came into this season realizing the Hawkeye were going to finish 10th or 11th.

That means that the rest of the league has more talent and is better. To get incensed about the play of this team to the point where you want to rip players is foolish, unfair and speak ill of those that want to go that route

Complete straw man. Nobody wants Iowa signing kids who can't compete in the Big Ten just because they are from Iowa.

Most people, unlike yourself, realize player evaluation has nothing to do with geography, if a kid can ball he cam ball, you seem to think that players from large cities have an inherent advantage and Fran should refuse to recruit good players from within the state, simply because they are from Iowa.

Would you take this group of Iowa boys on your Iowa team?
Grant Gibbs/Kaylon Williams/Wes Washpun
Matt Gatens/Eric May/Ogesbly
Harrison Barnes/ Jared Utoff/Creekmur
Doug McDermet(sp?)/Zach McCabe
Seth Van Deest/Malcolm Moore

Throw in a couple guys like Basabe,Cartwright, Cole and we have a team. Class like Woodbury,Gessel helps net year too.

Meh, people are just frustrated with losing and looking for someone to blame. Many think they are providing constructive criticism, but are really just ranting.
It's therapeutic for us all.
I 'd just like to say, I think Cole's play, effort and attitude has been nothing short of heroic!
