Who's Your "Pleasant Surprise" Player of the Year

Good call. After looking at the recent practice pictures posted on a different thread Smith is a beast for a true freshman. He'd be a pleasant surprise and much needed at WR.
Agree. WR is certainly a wide open position this season. Step up and get some Brandon Smith!!

Well i guess since i think Peyton Mansell is going to take the Starting QB job in camp here, i will say Mansell. If its not him, then I think Quarrels and Smith at WR. I think Quarrels will play a ton (he can block).

Probably the fastest way to PT for WRs... He's also got a couple years of college ball behind him. He won't be so wide eyed to everything like the freshman might be. I wouldn't be surprised if he's in there early either.. I don't really have a preference to who ends up being out there a lot. So long as they are making plays and not being liabilities out there.

Looks like at least 1 of 2.
Given our limited experience at WR, if Fant isn't one of them that would be almost criminal. We'll see if Gervase can keep up his level of play once opponents get some tape on him. He certainly looked pretty good today at times.

the defensive backfield. I expected them to get beat deep at least a couple of times today. Instead allen had a 24.9 QBR..........stanley had a 44.3. I don't have a damn clue how it's calculated but I do know his qb rating was higher last year against nebraska when he threw 5 picks.

Iowa really needs Lattimore or Reiff to be a pleasant surprise
Didn't reiff have a pick, that was a pleasant surprise. With you though, my pleasant surprise would be that it looks like we are finally recruiting depth on the D-line.

Lattimore was a force in the middle guys...there was a reason Jewell was running free all day. Wow...Bazata and Lattimore were surprising to me. I know they had a new center...but the guards were experienced and they didn't move the LOS at all. They had to run on the edge to get anything. They went backwards in short yardage too. When you go into the year concerned about your DT, and many on here saying it was going to be the weak point of the defense, that was impressive...and bodes well for the rest of the year. I know it wasn't OSU...but it's a very good sign.

I liked Easley's balance, great hands and ability to keep driving towards the end zone. Can't wait to see what Quarrels can do on a deep route. Jackson looks good and the D-line is going to be a force this year.

Josh Jackson really stepped up against Wyoming. Everybody was talking about Ragamba being the next superstar DB, we all forgot about the other new guy starting.at CB.

I am hoping that Stanley isn't our top unpleasant surprise. I don't expect him to be bad, but he still hasn't gotten over his performance anxiety. Some don't throw it off so easily, especially if they are running for their life.

That's good to hear on Lattimore. I didn't hear his name called much, which sometimes isn't a bad thing for a DT. I haven't got a chance to rewatch the game and take a look at different guys. If him and Bazata can own the inside this defense can be very good. Will need more consistent edge rush as well but I think that will come.

So...no Cooper, no B Smith, one play from IMSmith ending in a fumble (which likely means he won't see the field again until October).
Knowing Kirk, chances of any of these guys playing in Ames is pretty slim.

I don't have a surprise player.

But I do have a surprise coach . . . actually 3. Phil; Brian and Kirk. All of them have had moments where they almost bragged about Iowa's talent level. That is so damn refreshing after 18 yrs of what felt like faux humility at times. It's okay to compliment your opponent, but it's also okay to say things like: "The deepest D-line we've had since I've been here."

Heck we barely saw Devonte Young. It looks like it's going to be mostly MVB and Easley. Let's just hope they produce.
