Who's your favorite Hawkeye?

In my book, if they agreed to come to Iowa City to wear the black and gold, my answer is all of them.

But if I had to pick the one I most appreciate, it's Mel. Talented New York kid attending prep school in Massachusetts, committed to playing college hoops a little more than two hours up I-90 at a 3,200-student Catholic college for a passionate, energetic coach; takes a huge risk to follow that coach when he accepts a new job half way across fly-over country at a Big Ten program he, Mel, likely hadn't even heard of, let alone considered playing in, one that had hit rock bottom. Started all 31 games as a freshman, usually out of necessity at the 5 where he typically gave up several inches to taller, more physical B1G centers.

Despite getting pounded down low, Mel finished that first season ranked first in team rebounding (6.8), blocks (41) and free throws made (80) and attempted (112), and second in scoring (11.0). He played well enough to be voted to the B1G Freshman Team and to receive honorable mention for the all-conference team.

IMHO, Mel has been THE key player in helping Fran revive Iowa hoops and set a new direction in his very first year in Iowa City. As other talented players have arrived in Iowa City, Mel's role has changed and he doesn't get the recognition he did as a freshman. Still, as a senior, he is a very critical member of this team, grabbing rebounds, blocking shots, disrupting the opponent's flow, making timely baskets. His goaltended tip-in should have been the game-winner against MSU.

He will be missed when this season ends, which I hope will not happen until some time in April in Arlington, Texas.

Thanks for taking a chance, Mel! Hope you're enjoying the ride.

I guess I'd say White. It's hard not to like Marble being the team's leading scorer (I assume) and I was a big Roy Sr. fan back in the day, so it's pretty cool seeing the Marbles climbing the father-son duos all-time scoring list.

I'm starting to become an Olaseni fan rather quickly as well. He's really blossomed lately.

1980's: BJ Armstrong, Roy Marble, Ed Horton
1990's: Jess Settles, Chris Street, 'Dre Woolridge, Chris Kingsbury
2000's: Greg Brunner, Reggie Evans, Adam Haluska

Olaeseni and Josh O at the moment make me perk up the most.

Marble though is our best all around player.

Top 3 Favorites of all time

1. BJ Armstrong.
2. Chris Street
3. Chris Kingsbury

All time:

1) Ed Horton
2) Chris Street
3) Chris Kingsburry

Current:

I struggle with JO (but will admit been playing better as of late). No problems with any of the others. All different parts that make up a fun team to watch (including JO). My kids love Marble and (W)asabe
.

I like a lot of our players, certainly when I compare to juco thug city that exists over at lames. Personally though I like gabe, gessel, big red, all good kids. Wouldn't trade them

I don't really have a favorite. Marble is the best. White is the most exciting. But marble can drive ya crazy when he tries to take over games and white can struggle when he's not getting fast break points or scoring off rebounds.

The rest of the players are inconsistent in what the bring each game.

But as a whole unit this team should have a special place in the heart of all hawk fans... They should be forever remembered as the team that brought us back.

It is hard not to like this team on a personal level. They seem like a great group of guys and other than Meyer getting in a little hot water when he first arrived on campus I cannot think of another player getting in trouble since Fran has been here. I think that say a lot about the quality young men Fran has brought here and what he looks for when recruiting. Most likely they'll all play 4 years and hopefully end up with a degree too. It really is the way college athletics was/is supposed to be.

That said, Aaron White is my favorite current player.

Always loved watching Jeff Horner play. I had the privilege of playing under him at Grand View for a year and he is a great guy and coach. That 2005 team, in general, was a great team full of Iowa kids.

This current team, I really like Mike G. He blew me away with his athletic ability at the the Black n Gold Blowout this year. I'm excited to see how he continues to grow as a PG in the next 2 years.

No way can I name a favorite! I have had a different favorite in almost every game this year. Then, I get really mad at one or more Hawks when they have bad games. Maybe disappointed rather than mad, cause I love this team. Favorite all time player, and I could probably point to a lot of them, but comes down to Ronnie Lester.

Wait? Did you just say Mel likely hadn't heard of Iowa? I mean, athletes aren't that bright typically so I suppose it's possible but if he hadn't heard of Iowa he would have to be a really dumb person.
