Who’s Going To The Game?

You know what they say... It's not the other teams jobs to quit scoring its your job to stop them. I don't necessarily agree with it, but its what it is. You can be creative with a lead and put rules in place like so many passes before a shot or having or playing shell defense with little pressure on the ball handler, but at some point its unfair to tell them not to play hard.

On one hand I'm against running the score up, but on the other hand if little Timmy's average 2 ppg and getting very few minutes a game I see no reason holding him back when he finally gets a chance to play a decent amount of minutes simply because the other team can't stop him. Keeping starters in on the other hand and pressing is a bit much though IMO.
Dude it's my story, the kids were 3rd graders in an instructional league in which she brought her kid and all her teammates to and instead of letting the coaches pick the teams (like they were instructed to) she said they had to play together because they all car pooled from Cascade together. She coached them and they picked up two local kids one of which was mine. They won the first game by about 40 to 50 points and didn't play my kid or the other one, the team they played couldn't get the ball past half court. Kids were freaking crying and parents we're pissed. She then was ordered by the Y staff to sub players and no pressing after 20 pt lead. This is an absolutely true story. So excuse me when I see this woman I don't see a winner, I see a horrible person. But hey, horrible people succeed in life don't they.

Sorry had to rant, I'm going and taking my now three grown daughters and step-son. After the game we're going down on the field to take pictures with my niece who gets her turn in the marching band after waiting as an alternate for two years. Should be a lot of fun. Go Hawks, and hope for some warmer weather.

I'll be there, I get a free night stay across the street at the hospital (minor procedure for the grandson, nothing serious). Hopefully it will be a little warmer than the Goofer game, high of 50 I think.

-That is unfortunate what she did with stacking the teams. That should not have been allowed.
-I would not have a problem with her continuing to press. I think that is the job of the other team to stop it. That said, I would also sub in my bench players with the lead that high.

Can't blame players/coaches for continuing to try to win, regardless of who is in and who is playing.

But, I do think this example shows a problem we can have in our youth sports of the favoritism/stacking of roster making along with everyone gets a trophy society.

I will also say, if the league wanted to focus more on fundamentals of the game for this age level, they could have put in pressing rules from the start, a running clock, must sub reserve players in after a certain lead, etc.

They're fucking kids man. I could understand not having participation trophies in high school or some shit but these are 3rd grade girls.

My 1st grader dominated IC Kickers this year, averaged 2-3 goals a game, had 5 goals in one of them. That medal he got at the end of the season was the most important thing to him. Let them be kids.

Well when I coached Youth basketball and the game started getting out of hand I would at least take the press off, have starters play different positions, and get second stringers into the game. I never got any masochistic rush out of humiliating a less talented opponent.

I've been on the other side of it too. Neither side is very fun. You don't have to quit scoring or quit trying but Shelly and others took it to the extreme.

There's times when there is nothing you can do. And your absolutely right that those games absolutely suck. I actually coach a 5th grade team that had a rec game last weekend. We won 43-6 and I hated every second of it. Told the boys they could only defend inside the 3 point arch and to keep a foot in the lane at all times but nothing else I could do. Despite making them look to the 3rd option in their offense and no more fast break points. There's nothing fun about games like that.

I'm with you 100% and you left the part out about her bringing her own team when all the other teams were split up. I'm sorry for your kid as well definitely not fair to him and the other kid. IMO it's a league issue. Absolutely no reason she should get to play by a different set of rules. The league allowing her to do what she wants is entirely to blame as well and needs to be held accountable.

At that age there's tournament teams and rec teams and if the rec league is mixing things up and her team is hand pic there's a definite competitive advantage and it's absolutely ridiculous to think that she'd give the two outsiders (no offense) equal playing time or an equal opportunity to develop. The league admins deserve everything they get.

Well, one thing is for sure, she is instilling a killer instinct in those little ones. ;)

I guess they just never had seen anyone do this before at the third grade level at the YMCA, the C stands for Christian, I think. Third graders wanting to learn how to play basketball and have fun. Not lose by 50 points by girls far beyond the skill level for a fundamentals learning league. I guess there is a lesson to be learned in there somewhere. Claire teams got really good at lay ups. Of course they were already good.

I had a chance. But we are having a family get together tomorrow and I didnt want to drive the 9 hours total in one day. My nephew called and offered me his in laws tickets. They are the 12th row on the 50 yard line behind the Iowa bench. Next year.
