Who's Attending Games This Year?

After years of making the 11 hour round trip 7 times a year I'm thinking we'll only be at 2 maybe 3 games. Always loved the Hawks and always will no matter what, but gas, hotel, food, ticket prices, and losing the entire weekend has gotten to be too much. If I lived closer it wouldn't be a big deal. Might get back to it at some point. I hope I do.

My son is moved out of the house now and can't commit like he could when he was younger, and I've made the decision that I'm going to do next spring what I've wanted to for a really long time. I'm going to buy a touring motorcycle and the girlfriend and I are going to make that our thing. When my son started kindergarten I started coaching him in baseball and had the privilege of doing that all the way through high school. Back then I gave up my motorcycle, my garden, fishing for the most part, and I don't regret any of it a single bit. I worked 45-50 hours a week and in the summer months probably spent another 30 on baseball in some form or another whether it was practice, games, or field work. He was a 4-sporter in high school and I'm proud to say that in 13 years of youth/HS sports I never missed a game or track/XC meet. Got to go watch him run state track and XC 4 times...do not regret a thing.

I'm only 44 so it's not like this is some big retirement slowdown or something, but my priorities are changing. I still work the same amount, but there's a lot of riding we can do in September and October while it's cool enough but not cold. I'm getting a bike I want and that means small payments, which I'm fine with. I'm financially comfortable but not a big earner and don't spend out of my means. Folks both died at age 57 without a pot to piss in and never got to relax, so if 4 years of very manageable payments on the bike I've always wanted will let me get some enjoyment as a couple and by myself, I'm going to do it (paying 50% up front). The flip side is that's going to eat the money I'd spend on Hawk football weekends. Which is ok. I'll still watch every game and still cheer for the Hawks.

Wow. Sorry that got into an existential post. If you read all that I apologize for the 5 minutes of your life you won't get back.

If you're a motorcyclist I'll start a thread in OT right here where you can tell me what bike you ride and why. I haven't made my choice just yet but have it narrowed down to 2, possibly 3.

Great post. I will say this: you're part of a vanishing breed. Back in the '70s, '80s and every decade since I've had reasons to make the drive on I-80 from Iowa to CA and back. Up to 10 years ago there was always a steady stream of Gold Wings and other big bikes on the road -- often couples. Starting about 5 years ago, I noticed a dramatic drop in the # of those riders, and the VERY FEW I did see were pushing 65 and probably weren't long for many more of those long road trips either. The Baby Boomers are aging out of the big road bikes...I'm just shocked at how quickly and noticeable the change was.

I hope to make to at least one game this season now that there's an offense worth watching (fingers crossed).

It's so weird when your kids grow up and don't need you for much anymore. You find you have a lot of free time on your hands with no events to go to or just hanging out with them. You want them to be independent and you know they can't stay forever. I had a Moto Guzzi bike back in the day and it was so hard to find parts and get it fixed when something was wrong. It's cool that you're picking up the bike and hopefully you'll enjoy that new found freedom.

I am likely going to the Indiana game. Once Iowa makes the Conference Title game in Indy, I will attend that too. :)
I didn't get the mobile passes this year like I've done forever, so the other night I was looking around at tix to see what's out there for the ones I do end up going to. Holy shit they're high as hell on the secondary. Prices are way too inflated to buy now IMO. I'm sure it's the Gronowski hype just like it was for CM but jeez louise...

I'm gonna wait it out and if they drop a game or two or Gronowski doesn't look like Tom Brady outta the gate they'll fall back down to earth like they did in the McNamara era.

Hey, that rhymes...

Part of it is prices, too.

A brand new Street Glide or Road Glide base model will nail you for $35K after tax and bogus dealer fees. A CVO version of wither of those two bikes is over $50K by the time you walk out.

A 2020 SG with decent miles and taken care of will be in the $15K range, you have to go to probably 2010 model year before you drop blow ten grand.

Indian baggers are a little less money but they aren't as desirable as Harleys, and the only other bigger touring bike out there is the GoldWing. So basically there's only about 6 models from 3 brands out there to choose from anymore. All of them are priced for the older crowd with a lot of disposable income.

I wonder how many folks in the NW corner of Iowa make the trip to IC for games. It just takes a hell of a commitment to do that. It's 4-6 hours one way depending on where you're at up there. Fighting traffic, parking how much it all costs etc etc everything Fry rattled off. You can't be poor and do it that's for sure. I'm not rich I'd say $ is why I don't go as much as anything. I could carve out the time even though it's about an 8-9 hr drive for me. But that's just a lot of $ and my couch and big screen tv is mighty comfy.

Pinched nerve in my knee curtesy of a hip replacement

Doesn't hurt but limits climbing stadium steps

Miss screaming with the devout fans, but actually prefer watching the game on TV

Replays and rewinding to see plays on a big screen make up for the actual game experience

Wow. I did not realize that.

Kept my season tix first few years in Florida - ‘95-‘98. Too far and too big a hassle pre-internet. Now I have tix for the best Iowa program —- Iowa WBB. Much better value. A program about which I am excited.

I'm sure I'll go to at least one with my wife. It's our version of a weekend (well, one day) away together.

We look on the different places like Stubhub, etc. the night before or the morning of the game. You can get really good seats from people that are just trying to get something for their tix. The night game against PSU a few years ago is the only one where it didn't happen. 2 tix in the worst seats in the house were over $200

Nothing like spending time with you kids doing things they love. My boys play baseball and I loved coaching them. One has graduated and one will be a senior. Coaching them in football is fun, but not like baseball. Because my oldest son will graduate next spring, I have to decide whether or not to keep coaching because my oldest daughter will start varsity in 3 sports, plus track. My youngest daughter will be a freshman, but will start in 3 sports as well. She's going to be a 7th grader and would start varsity in all 3 sports this year. She's a stud like her mom was. The only reason I would keep coaching is because we need the money. Luckily, my oldest son went to JUCO free for academics and my other son will be able to as well. The way it's going, my daughters will be able to as well (top 2 in their class is a free ride), if they choose to go to a JUCO.

My oldest daughter and oldest son are diehard fishermen. My daughter will outfish everyone, every time we go. I mean EVERY time we go. It's weird, but she's really good at it. I'm really going to miss all of it.

It's a shit ton of walking to get around on game days.. I'm not saying one has to be in great shape to do it but ya can't have a bum wheel and have much fun doing it. At least I wouldn't want to try it.

Everything about how convenient things are to be able to watch games (plural can channel surf record pause rewind etc) just makes going to them a tougher sell for me too. At some point they'll be a pushback from fans and they'll see less fans in the stands. I'm not sure when that'll be it doesn't look like it'll be this yr. But it'll happen if they keep jacking up the prices.

As stated above, I actually enjoy watching games on TV than going to the game. The actual act of watching, especially the big games with a national broadcast crew. I would enjoy the atmosphere at the game, though. I enjoy listening to the comments from the broadcasters, some better than others of course.

I have never enjoyed watching a game at a bar. Too distractive as I get into the broadcast too much.
