Who the new coach needs to be.....

Well if you a hire a BCS assistant with good recruiting ties, then we just got both of those categories.

We are not going to pay that much. To get an established coach to go to a disaster of a team with high school facilities would cost a rediculous amount, and come with more pressure than most jobs in the country.

I doubt we would even break the bank, and I am even less convinced someone will take it.

Why did Johnny Orr go to ISU in the 80s?

Michigan was way higher than ISU in every respect but ISU threw a boatload of cash out there. The story is that ISU contacted Johnny looking for a name to pursue, when he found out how much ISU was willing to pay he threw his name in for consideration.

Do you know what that boat load of cash was back then? I think around 50k.

Well to the Johnny Orr example the two coaches preceeding Orr went a combined 57-104 so that was pretty much where Iowa is right now. As to the facilities in 12 months the facilities at Iowa will be above average at BCS schools and middle of the road in the Big Ten.

Will it be easy to find an established/name coach - no
Is it impossible - no

Why do you even post if you have nothing of substance to post? Hell, why don't we just drop the basketball program all together if you're convinced we can't do better?!?!

The fact is, we can get a coach with an acumen close to what I think the next coach needs to have.

And with all due respect, if you don't think we don't have the ability to pay the next coach a boatload of money you are an even bigger dolt than I originally thought. We have the 15th largest athletic department in the NATION in terms of revenue.....probably higher now that the BTN has really taken off. But yeah, I guess you're right, we can't afford a high-dollar coach.....whatever.

I still like Gillispie a lot and I think Iowa would be very attractive to him....right now, not a year from now.

Gillispie was arrested in 2003 and then again in Sept of 2009 ( just 6 months ago ) for DUI.
Barta would not chance hiring someone that would potentially be Iowa's version of Larry Eustachy. Whether that outlook is right or wrong is a moot point. I don't see Barta taking the chance on him.

Wayne McClain is guy who I would give serious consideration to. We need to be able to recruit in Illinois. He has great contacts in the state. I am not that worried about his lack of DI coaching experience. He understands the league and understands the type of player it takes to win.

You'd be correct, sir.

Who the coach needs to be....

....is anyone but Todd Lickliter.

If I have to come up with a name to fit the profile, I can come up with one:

Billy Gillespie.

I really think he would be a shock to the system on the UI campus. Perhaps that is what we need to try to keep up with the Joneses.

Really? Anyone but Todd Lickliter?

You make it sound like he's the worst coach to ever coach the game of basketball. He may end up proving to not be a fit at Iowa but at least make "smart" posts.

TIA.

And really? Billy Gillespie? A guy who couldn't get it done at one of the most storied programs in the history of college basketball? One who has made some questionable off the court decisions as well?

-1 on THAT post.

Carry on.

No.

Trust me on this one.

If you have never liked nor trusted anything I have ever posted, this is one thing you can trust me on: Wayne McClain is NOT D1 Head Coaching material. Period. He is a lifer as an assistant.

In fact one would have thought the day after Sergio's last game he'd have been canned.....
