Who should Iowa hire?

I am sure McCullom would have taken the Iowa job last year as that is a big step up over Drake. But now? He can do better than Iowa.

Whether Devries wanted or wants the Iowa gig seems to be fueled by a lot of internet speculation. We should know more in a couple weeks what Beth wants to do.
It's not internet speculation for me. But since I'm on the internet and telling you, it's definitely internet speculation for you.

It probably will end up being a total surprise.

I feel pretty confident that DeVries and McCollum both will at least be contacted for interviews. If Indiana actually does make a hard push for McCollum, my guess is that he would at least hear Iowa out and see if the offer is in the same ballpark.

My personal preference would be either Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State, or Mark Byington, Vanderbilt.

I can see some blue-blood going after Calhoun at some point. He's a solid, solid coach.

FWIW, there also have been early rumblings about Chris Collins.

His team won the MVC with a new roster of players, with 5 of them being his former players at NW Mo. St. That tells me that he a) won more with less, b) developed the shit out of these guys so they could go from D2 recruits to D1 conference champs, and/or c) recruited D1 kids to a D2 school, which means he's a helluva recruiter.
I like that as well. Although, I'm not sure he will have enough kids to bring with him this time.

Well, i'm a drake fan as well as a hawkeye fan.. And I'd hate to see coach Mac leave Drake right now. I was hoping he would stay for a few more years. Also I really don't think hawkeye fans could handle coach Macs type of offense even though he wins. I just don't see it. The Big Ten conference is a lot different, then the Missouri Valley also.
hate defense and winning? 2 things that sound pretty good about now

It was time for Fran to go

The recruiting needs to be upgraded drastically, especially bringing Large Lads in the middle who can play solid D and get offensive rebounds, plus emphasizing playing D overall, also playing
as close as possible to turnover free

We did play D on occasion late in the season but not on a regular basis

And perhaps more judicious using TOs. perhaps calling them when the opponent
starts on a run, take their motivation away and give the Hawks a chance to rest
and adjust to the tempo

Fran was rather a bust in The Dance, no excuse to be unprepared for the first games of the
tournament

Losing in the second round losing to Oregon with Garza, Wieskamp, and the twins on the team and then also losing to the Richmond Spiders the next season in the first round

We won the BTT that year and were a five seed in the Dance and lost to #12 seed Richmond

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After helping to resurrect West Virginia University's men's basketball program in his first year, the university may have a hard time keeping head coach Darian DeVries.

And watching WI and MI in championship, 4 7 footers in starting line up, add in guard play. You can attack that with a Garza and the twins, but if you dont have that, ya need defense!

The real question this thread should be asking is how Iowa is going to get even remotely competitive in NIL. Until that’s fixed it ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference who they hire.

I have a hint for you, it’s not getting fixed. Iowa’s donors have gone all in on football. And they should. There isn’t enough for two major sports in Iowa City in the NIL era. You have to either go all in on one or suffer in both. Wrestling is independently supported otherwise it’d be in the same boat too.

Maybe someday if they add revenue sharing or restrict free agency it might get better, but get used to this until then.

I might argue this. Exhibit #1: Women’s Basketball

Also remember, any prospective coach that interviews and has interest shown is going to ask a hell of a lot of his own elections, including, “How much would I have available to pay players and what is the future plan for basketball NIL?” It’s not going to work to just have Beth say, “We promise we’re going to get more money.” At least it wouldn’t be to me. I’d want to sit down with the top X amount of donors and find out what the commitments are. If it’s bare bones again why come to Iowa unless you’re a mid major guy looking for your big break? And is a mid major guy looking for a big break who they want anyway?

The problem is that the ladies have young talent, and more coming in, so unfortunately all we may have is a mid major guy and history has demonstrated how well that worked out. It has been said before in this forum, “ be careful what you wish for”.

As a side note- who do we want to see get the Nil money- Ladies, who have been in the last two championship games, or men, who haven’t sniffed a second weekend for a very long time.

I was just going to acknowledge that very fact. All I am saying is we can be a basketball AND football school
If we could we would’ve been. Iowa would need $4-5 million in additional money to be in the top half of the B1G. They ain’t getting that from our women’s program. They’re good, but the Clark era is doneski.

If there was enough money to make football and men’s basketball competitive they would’ve done it already. I’m fine with football talking all the cake until there’s revenue sharing. There’s a finite amount of collective money available and you sure as hell better funnel it to your biggest revenue sport first.
