Who should Iowa hire?

How come no one mentioning Greg McDermott from Creighton? Money issue?
If I were him, I would have no interest in coming here at this point in his career. He's got a good enough thing going there. I'm not convinced Iowa is a better job right now than basically any Big East team.

He falls into the "Only comes if Iowa is a dream job OR he's getting (and really cares about) a fat raise" category. If he's interested, I wouldn't complain about the hire, but I would prefer someone younger.

OK...I speak/ask the obvious. Please read the following excerpt from Wikipedia re: Lickliter

"Collegiate head coaching career

Butler Bulldogs

[edit]
In May 2001 Lickliter was named Butler University's 20th men's head basketball coach, replacing Thad Matta, who accepted the same position at Xavier University. During his first season, Lickliter led the Bulldogs to a then-school record 26 victories and third consecutive Horizon League regular season championship. They also cracked the Associated Press Top 25 rankings for the first time in 53 years. The following year the Bulldogs surpassed their previous season's win total, finishing 27–6. Lickliter's 53 wins during the first two years of his head coaching career rank third best in Division I history, behind Bill Guthridge (58 wins) of North Carolina and Everett Case (55 wins) of North Carolina State. During his six years as head coach, he owned the top three single-season win totals in Butler basketball history and led the Bulldogs to the postseason four times, including two appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16. In April 2007, the National Association of Basketball Coaches named Lickliter the National Coach of the Year.[2] CollegeHoops.net also named Lickliter the High-Major Coach of the Year.[3]"

Lick = Six years of sustained excellence at a mid-major. Next hot coach ready for the next level.

Doesn't it bother anyone that McCollum has the same pedigree/and coaching style?
Sure, he has had wild success, but at NMSU, a Div-II program.
Yes, he's had a great great year this year, but it's his *first* and only year, at Div-I. Lick had six.
B1G wasn't the Horizon League. B1G isn't the MVC.

Dunno, seems like we're putting a lot of stock in someone with *one* year of Div-I experience. If he signs on, I wish him nothing but success...

Then, again, maybe this is the best Iowa can hope for?

(And let's not forget....Butler Bulldogs and Drake Bulldogs...if one believes in quasi-serendipity....)

Food for thought only here.....

This x 1,000.

People really need to drop this stupid narrative about "he's an Iowa guy..." so it's his "dream job" bullshit.

It doesn't matter that Devries and McCollum were from Iowa. Devries wasn't and isn't an Iowa fan. He didn't go to Iowa. He's been out of the state for longer than he's been in it. His brother played football here and that's literally the only connection. And being an "Iowa guy" doesn't mean a damn thing about coaching skill or whether the program would be successful or not. It's the dumbest thing in the world.

These coaches are going to go where they have the most NIL to work with, period. It's the way college sports is now and if you can't come to grips with it it's probably time for you to switch to following high school instead. There's nothing college about college sports anymore at the D1 level...it's professional sports by definition.

And regarding McCollum, he doesn't have the same pedigree as Lickliter, he has way less of a pedigree. Lick made two S16s and made 4 dances in a MUCH better P6 league. McCollum has ONE YEAR OF D1 EXPERIENCE TOTAL for god's sake and people are saying, "He's an Iowa boy, he's doing great things at Drake, he should be our coach!" Lolz. Look no further than Lick to see what happens when you make those assumptions.

But all that is totally moot anyway. Until Iowa gets $5-6 million more in NIL than what they have now, it isn't going to matter.

What's really funny is the people saying Iowa "missed" on Devries, that they "dodged a bullet" when Devries went to Indiana, blah blah, blah.

Talking to some folks I trust a lot and who would know better than any of us, there was no bullet to dodge. It was all speculative bullshit. Devries never interviewed, never got an offer, never talked to Iowa. It was all made up BS by the twitterverse.

Iowa didn't miss on anyone.

That's what I was wondering...

BG did talk to his agent, she kicked the tires, but I get your point, tho and it is fair.

How much of Lick's success was Brad Stevens as his main assistant coach?

I think a lot since Brad had success everywhere he coached and Lick stopped once Brad wasn't on his staff.

I don't recall who it was, but there was a poster shortly after Lickliter was hired that stated that Lick's success at Butler was due to Stevens and that he would be exposed once he started coaching here. Pretty solid take in retrospect.

I think a good AD like Goetz would have sniffed that out fairly quickly. It would only take a handful of deep conversations - if you are a well connected AD - to learn that Stevens was the engine behind Butler. Not just a bright young assistant, but without a doubt was THE guy. A fair amount has come out about that.

Instead Barta took a short list from an executive search firm and then interviewed people. Never understood why a good AD would need an outside search firm for a major sport.

No one knew that Butler had a 20 something rock star as a potential head coach. You would have to be part of the Butler administration or super deep in the basketball world to even see it.

I won’t defend Barta on much, but I will defend him on the Lickliter hire.

Yes, people did know. To what degree isn't necessarily knowable. But he was a 30 year old who had been an assistant under Lick for 6 or 7 years. Thad Matta and Barry Collier knew - so hard to imagine others didn't as well.

It's an AD's job to be connected with people who are "super deep" in the college basketball and football worlds.

As I stated before, it is easy to say that shit now. Okay, start rattling off names of guys, that are assistants, that are going to be awesome future head coaches.

Tell me what Barta didn’t know then, that BG doesn’t know now?

Sort of like these NFL owners who salivate and pant over a player who had a so-so college career but a great combine.

The body of work suggests one thing but they focus in on another. Sometimes leading to bad results

Actually the post at the time wasn't. It was before Lickliter coached a game at Iowa, or Stevens at Butler.
