Who replaces Sash and Greenwood?

SS - Bernstine (1st Shot in Spring), Hitchens (2nd), Derby (3rd if he switches bc it will take a year to learn), Law (4th & SpTeams when he gets here in Fall)/Donatell

FS - Miller (Speed & Hitting is actually an upgrade), Nielsen (2nd), Swanson/Donatell

Derby will never be a safety at Iowa. It's QB or LEO for him. I doubt he has the speed/quickness to play safety at the D-1 level. I know that he played that in HS but I just can't see him there at Iowa. I'm pulling for Bernstine to win SS to end his injury filled Hawkeye career. He and Miller could make a good safety tandem with Nico Law taking over for him next year.

My bets:

FS: Tanner Miller, Jack Swanson/Nick Nielsen
SS: Jordan Bernstine/Anthony Hitchens, Tom Donatell/Nico Law

Lastly, I'm curious about Kirksey. Depending on his physical development, maybe they'll try to get him to play some SS.

I agree with this, but I actually expect Hitchens to win the job over Bernstein....I just have to believe there is a reason that Bernstein has never won a job....granted injuries have played a role, but I'm still skeptical of his overall ability....hopefully he proves me wrong.

Younger players tend to play "more hungry." Bernstine played better when he was younger and played with more reckless abandon. After getting injured and seeing younger guys pass him by ... I think that takes a mental toll on players. I think that he lost confidence and it also ended up making him lose the "EDGE" of being hungry to make an impact. Of course, the whole issue of being tentative and being worried about getting reinjured possibly figured in too ...

Thus, I wouldn't be shocked if Hitchens ends up passing Bernstine either.

However, that said ... I hope that Bernstine proves me wrong too. He certainly has the experience and the knowledge of the system to play a bigger role. We'll see ....
