Who Knows ?

Althouh I think CJ has the stronger arm, sure looks like we are watching a different QB here in Jake. He has had some "coaching going on" at Iowa in the Davis system.

The pass to Powell wasn't a bomb guys. It was like thirty yards or whatever. Despite what you think jake has made completed many passes that deep

KF and GD have a leash on our QBs, they dont want to take any chances because throwing it deep is a high risk play, but has big play potential. I think Vandenberg would have flourished in a spread offense that throws the ball a ton, because he did that in highschool, and broke Iowa passing records in the process. Yes I know thats only highschool, and its Iowa, but JVB had a good arm.

KF and GD want these short, intermediate passing plays because they are low risk, but the thing is, there is no big play potential. If KOK was still here, I believe Rudock would be more successful. JR has a good arm.

By the way, I thought the coaches wanted to put more emphasis on big plays this year? At least that's what they said this past off-season. I should have known better than to believe that crap.

Jake can do it but he is thinkin too much out there. You can see himhesitate all the time or be too quick to take the check down. I think it's a confidence thing and also a problem of overthinking.
The last couple of drives against Ball State showed what he is capable of if e just goes out and flings it around. They should have done a lot more of that against Iowa State.

Another video showing his ability to throw the deep ball.

Doesn't even look like jake. He looks so confident in these videos. He was throwing great receivers though: Rashad Greene (Florida State) Phillip Dorsett (Miami) Lemarcus Joyner (Florida State) and his running backs were Giovanni Bernard (Bengals) and James White (Wisconsin). Unreal talent on his teams

Couple things -

HS speed is way less than D1 speed. Many of those passes would have been picked off in college.

He shows almost too much touch. His passes are accurate but most floated in there on an arc. More like lobbing grenades than throwing darts.

His release is very quick; he doesn't load up to throw the ball.

Showed one pass where he threw it into a phone booth on a rope -- that's promising.
Showed one pass where he threw it 40 yds to the opposite side of the field on a rope across his body.

I'd say he has 25-30 yd D1 hard throwing strength. Everything else has 'touch' but little zip.

Jake threw a beautiful over the shoulder deep ball to KMM against Nebraska last year in Lincoln. Tough throw and on 3rd and long to boot.

He can do it.

The closer you get to throwing the ball as far as you can, the less accuracy you have. Jake can make a 50 yard throw, he just can't be consistent with it...is my guess.

Great thread, guys! (NO sarcasm) This was an actual discussion with varied opinions and some good attempts to give examples to make your point. I would say that the biggest issue may be that Jake, and probably CJ if he got more time, have had the fear of god put in them about making an error. Look at JR after his interception against ISU...he absolutely went into a shell at that point. I just wish those JR (or CJ) would just go out and have fun. Both of them are very good athletes and good citizens. They deserve better than they are getting right now.

I think its honestly a combination of over thinking the deep ball and checking down way to quickly.

I don't know what to think. If GM says he has the arm I belive him. But I sure would like to see it for myself

I know this is a huge topic of debate. Playing both qbs multiple series and taking 1 intermediate to deep shot per series will reveal the answer.

I still say its a scheme issue and/or "be safe" issue more than an a pure ability issue.

This is a great question. The message boards in general have reached the conclusion that Jake does not have a strong arm, especially compared to his backup. I would very much like to see some evidence of that...or, is it just another message board myth? Now, we have seen some bad throws on the rare times he has gone deep. But, I am not talking about his accuracy. I want to know how WE know that he does not have a strong arm. Yes, I have seen every game Jake has played in at Iowa, home and away, in the stadium. I also re-watch nearly all of our games on TV. Bottom line is, I don't know the answer to Lasbur's very interesting question.

When a qb throws deep with loft, but under throws the receiver, that is a sign of a weak arm (assuming the ball didn't slip). When a qb throws deep with a line drive (no loft) it is typically because the qb understands he needs distance. Loft subtracts from the distance. Throwing a line drive deep ball also leaves less room for error. The best way to throw deep is with loft and distance that allows the WR to run under it. This is precisely why CJ's throw excite so many. That is what it should look like and JR hasn't been able to do that, yet.

But, if you go back and re-watch the BSU game, JR was flat missing wide open targets. He missed a wide open #87 that would have given us the lead vs ISU instead of having to settle for a fg.

Junior year of HS highlights. He can throw the deep ball.

That was depressing. I know that he's supposed to be a very smart med student, if he was a little smarter he'd have realized that Ferentz sucks and would ruin him. He should have went to Miami.
