Who is Iowa State's biggest threat?

I'm curious... who are some players on Iowa State's roster that Iowa should be concerned about?

I don't know much about Iowa State and I have no desire to visit their websites to learn more. Last year I knew Klein and Knott were damn good players on defense. I knew Steele Jantz was quite erratic, but he was also athletic enough to make some plays.

This year, I have no idea. I haven't had a chance to see Sam Richardson, and I know nothing about the rest of their offense except that they have several RB's who have been there for awhile and haven't really done anything special. I don't know who any of their receivers are. I have no clue who they have on defense that one would consider to be an "impact player".

Now, I understand this sounds kind of arrogant. I don't mean it to sound that way because I also understand Iowa State hasn't needed many "impact players" in order to beat Iowa since their players tend to play up for this game. However, this is the first year in quite some time where I know very little about any player on their entire roster. I've firmly believed all offseason that losing Knott and Klein would cripple their defense.

Maybe some of our resident Cyclone posters can fill me in on who I should be keeping an eye on going into the game on Saturday....

It's Richardson. For ISU to win, he has to have a good game, maybe even a great game if his defense doesn't get their tackling issues straightened out.

No one else? It all comes down to the performance of their QB?

If that's the case then that makes me feel quite a bit better, because from what I've heard he hasn't done anything special when playing against a defense with a pulse. Of course that just means he'll have the god damn game of his life against the Hawks...

this is the obvious answer. my answer on coe was not serious, just in case anyone thought that. we'll stop their running game, so their QB will tell the tale.

Their QB is solid although it seems he chooses to run far too often and probably is not done getting injured this year especially if their Oline plays like it did against UNI. I think that they have a couple of fast RBs. Their safeties are good.

their starting TE is good but has been having injury issues and may not play much against Iowa,

He looked like Steve Young against Kansas so we know he's capable of having a big game if there is no pressure on him and the secondary is bad.

Chris Williams, Jim Brinson, and Ken Miller all thought that ISU has just as much talent at TE as Iowa does.

There are only maybe two or three that would start for Iowa. Linebacker, Jeramiah (?) forgot his last name and they got two pretty good running backs. Nobody else would start for Iowa.

I read this thread title wrong. I read it as biggest threat to them not for them.

To answer my version, Hyden Fry.

Richardson is the biggest threat. He is the type of QB that can cause problems for us. Statistically he's played better than Rudock so far. Richardson was 22 of 32 (68%) for 242 yards, 7.6 ypa and 2 TDs. That's a 152.9 QB rating. Rudock has a 113 QB rating so far. Richardson also rushed for 74 yards against UNI.

I still think we will win the game but we need to establish the run and stick with it, and hopefully contain Richardson.

I read in the paper that their center (Farniok I believe) isn't going to play due to some sort of leg injury. I've heard he's arguably their best lineman. That can't help their situation.

I might as well just say this right now. I'm going to be freaking irate if the Hawks don't bring the trophy back to Iowa City this year. If they figure out a way to lose yet again I'm probably going to disappear for a few weeks because I simply will have zero desire to talk about the Hawks. There are no excuses for a loss in this game. On paper, this Iowa State team is flat out horrible. I don't want to hear the "we have a young QB in a tough environment BS". UNI went to Ames and beat them fair and square. Iowa should never be the 3rd best team in the state.

Sam Richardson
DeVondrick Nealy (Didn't play against UNI) home run hitter as well as a North and South Runner
Aaron Wimberly
Justin Coleman
Quenton Bundrage

Richardson is ok, not real good. He's so frail that one good hit on Saturday will put an end to his career. He about looks like a string bean. If Carl Davis lands on him he'll be out of the game.

Yea, he's no Seneca Wallace (or maybe even Steele Jantz) but he's got to play well to beat us. Typically though when Iowa loses it's because the opposing QB plays well and finds ways to exploit our defense.

It's certainly a winnable game (and losable too). ISU wasn't impressive against UNI, but there were a few huge plays by the Panthers that turned the game. Richardson is a capable quarterback and their group of RB's may not have any one individual who is great, but several with different strengths who are all capable. We have examples in recent history of ISU not playing well in the week leading up to the Iowa game and then coming out and winning/playing well. Cyclones have a number of new players in the trenches who I would imagine will improve the more they play.

If he runs the ball as much as he did against UNI he is toast.
