White: Wonder Why?

White has a terrific game and is very productive so this is by no means a criticism but an observation. I wonder why he doesn't periodically post up, especially when Iowa goes into their 3-5 minute scoring droughts. I suppose this is more the coaches not implementing this than anything, but I wonder why they don't have him on the block a few times a game, especially if they can exploit a mismatch. I mean he is pretty nifty around the basket and has the size & has a propensity to get fouled. This could really help to bridge Iowa's scoring droughts.

One would think he could be effective posting up as he's agile around the hoop.

I've wondered that myself. Sounds like a question for The Good Timey Radio Hour. (Hawk Talk)

Aaron's strengths on offense seem to be running the floor for a lay-up, jam or ally-oop, grabbing an offensive board for a quick put-back or getting the ball down low, making a move towards the basket to draw the foul. Fortunately he has become one of the team's most proficient free-throw shooters.

Would be interesting to see him with a spot-up shot but I just don't know how he is more than five feet from the hole.

I think it's because he is not very good at it. He is at his best cutting, slashing, and finishing at the rim. If he can get a real good seal on the low block, he's pretty effective too, but that's normally off movement/cutting.

He's also not terrible with the dribble, and he is showing to be a bit more of a jump shot threat this year. I say we leave our post-up game for Woody/Oleasani and if we want to exploit match ups Uthoff.

Let's continue to let White be one of the truly elite garbage men.

Agree with Drew... Only times I remember seeing him do that is when he has a big mismatch on him. Someone 6'6 or shorter. He's just not developed that skill for whatever reason. It'd be nice if either he or Uthoff could but that just isn't their games. Diversity is what makes players unstoppable more so then being really good at any one thing. Being able to take advantage of what ever situation your in on the court is key.

Aaron White has me on the fence.... is he a good player or is he just really good at getting to the line? Even if it's just the latter of the 2, you gotta give him some credit. Some of these stats are just down right impressive:

86.3% from the free throw line for a 4 man.
Average FTA per game is at a career high of 7.8.

one would think that the four would do that by default.

I know there was a lot of hope that whitey would be a beast because he would be playing with his back to the basket instead of most of the time at the three spot.

it floors me that there are still peeps on this board that wonder if White is a good player.

I agree with this. I've seen White make back to the basket plays on occasion, probably only when a guard switches onto him and he has a big advantage, and he doesn't really look like he belongs there. He's found his niche as a guy who starts on the perimeter and moves in to make plays. If he's only exploiting mismatches, fine, but I don't think there should be a point of emphasis to have him post up. Olaseni is our guy for that, anyway.

Not White's game. I personally don't think he could make a post up move without it looking like he is obviously not trying to just draw a foul. You rarely see White go the the basket with a strong move where it looks like his main objective is to put the ball in the basket at whatever the cost. Most often, he makes a move toward the basket, then sacrifices a GOOD attempt at making the basket for instead trying to draw contact. Which is fine, cause he is making it work, and I still think White is an asset to this team. He could be a beast though if he had a consistent jump shot from 12 ft on.

Yes, I've come to the conclusion that maybe playing with his back against the hoop is not his strong point.

Think about if he could develop a prolific 3 pt shot (30-40%), he'd be a match-up horror.

He's fun to watch, though. It's awesome having a guy on the team that can get to the line when they have to. He's going to obliterate the FT record by the end of the season.
