Which situation would you rather be in?

With so many people not happy with Lick, I'm wondering which situation everyone would rather be in. The situation at Iowa State? Or our situation?

Iowa State is in a bad state. Almost as bad as us. They have talent, but still can't win games and fans are becoming very impatient with McDerrmot (sp?). The team seems to have gotten worse as the year has gone on. I would assume Brackins will probably go pro at the end of the year and I wouldn't be surprised if they have a new coach by the start of next season (just my opinion).

Iowa is also in a bad state. We don't have much talent, but are very young and have decent recruiting class coming in. Hawkeye fans have been impatient with Lick ever since he got here and the team has been hampered by transfers. Assuming no one transfers out this year again, the team should be better next year and the year after that. This team has been improving but is very inconsistant.

With all the people saying this is the worst team in Iowa's history and Lick needs to go. I'm asking Hawkeye fans which situation they would rather be in. The talented underachieving team that might not have a coach much longer? Or a young, not very talented team that should should be better in years to come.

I would rather be in our situation.

I think I would rather have the talent than not. At least the next coach would have something to work with. Just my opinion.

You say ISU is "almost" as bad as our situation (implying that it is not quite as bad) and they have more talent. I'm wondering why you would rather have our situation?

Both situations suck, but I would rather be in Iowa's situation. At least Iowa fans expected the basketball team to suck, so its not quite as dissapointing. I know before the season ISU had expectations of getting around 22 wins.

ISU's situation sort of reminds me of Iowa's football season a few years ago. I think it was in '05 or '06, expectations were pretty high, and we finished 6-7. That season really sucked.

But Iowa still has a really good chance to win the conference tournament, make the big dance as a 15 seed, and very easily could make the sweet 16, where we will meet Syracuse, and will lose on a last second full court shot made by Wes Johnson.

I'm saying its almost as bad because they have underachieved for a couple years now and this year has been the worst. I think they've won 4 games in the big 12. The fans had ncaa tourney expectations this year.
I would rather be in our situation because I believe our future looks bright even though its been a rough 3-4 years.

I hope you are right, and next year should tell us a lot.

I guess it depends on if you are assuming both coaches are going to be back next year. If so, then it's a tougher call. In that case, I suppose I too would probably take Iowa, simply because McDermott seems to do less with more when compared to Lickliter, but neither situation makes me salivate, that's for sure.

I'm honestly not sure which team I should expect to be better next year - Iowa or ISU.

Wow...it's like asking would you rather die from cancer or heart disease. There's no good answer.

With both Iowa and Iowa State being fairly equal at this point in terms of wins and losses and fans getting highly irritated and Iowa State probably losing Brackings and Gilstrap (if they do) and Iowa losing nobody that matters ( if nobody transfers) I would certainly hope that Iowa is better next year. McDermott is on shaky ground I would think, but back to the old line of who is ISU gonna get to coach them that is any better?

Before the season started I thought this year would tell the story on McDermott and next year would on Lickliter, maybe Im wrong though

Robert Frost's Fire and Ice
(From Harper’s Magazine, December 1920.)

SOME say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To know that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

much rather be in the position of the hawks. i don't think this team lacks talent, what it lacks is experience and a go-to-guy. i know a lot of u don't believe it, but the ship is heading in the right direction. might be the worst season we have had in a while, but i think 3 years from now, we are gonna be talking about some of the better teams we have had in the last decade.

Is this a serious statement or a little tongue in cheek?

Iowa State no doubt.

Mac has had 4 years and its very clear he isnt going toget it done. I think Pollard has an easy choice with what to do with him. Plus he would be cheaper to buyout than Lick

I would rather be in Iowa's situation. ISU has been a huge letdown this year. 2 NBA stars will probably be gone next year. Iowa has been what most expected. Doesn't change the fact that either situation is bad. Hopefully we pull a miracle tonight at Wiscy.

I would disagree that Gillstrap and Brackins will be NBA stars. Brackins has done nothing but hurt his NBA draft stock this year. Gillstrap will join a large group of 6'6-6'7 wing players. He's OK but no where near many of the players in the NBA at that size right now. He might develop into something but I could see him being a D-Leaguer.

As for the better situation, it's odd we had this exact conversation/argument at work today well before I saw this message board. I think I have to say Iowa. At least we have the certainty of having most, if not all, of our players and coach back next year as well as a decent recruiting class coming in. It can't really be as bad as this year, can it?
Iowa St. is in a bad place. If McDermott gets canned and they lose Gillstrap and Brackins, they have absolutely nothing left in the closet. They lost Pomlee, Staiger and for some reason McDermott didn't bring his son in for next year either. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall??

Absolutely agree with you. Shouldn't have used the word stars. 2 potential NBA players would have been much better to describe their talent. I agree Brackins has hurt his NBA stock this year.
