Which is more likely to happen?

That the offense for Iowa is more aggressive with their play calling on early downs and just plain overall?

Or that the defensive strategy will be more aggressive with blitzing and not just running the same 4-3 cover 2 over and over regardless of the down and distance or personal the other team has out there?

I wish wish wish it'd be the offense. But I don't see that happening much even with CJ as the QB. I think they'll make a huge effort to get the running game going and will be as predictable as ever about it. Don't get me wrong they'll take shots. After turnovers or after they get the defense on their heels. But I think that 3 yard hitches and out patterns to the TEs and WRs will be the norm.

As far as defense goes I think they showed that they will mix up their packages some last year and not just on 3rd down. I think I'd like to see either the combo of an extra DB out there more. Be it Fleming or which ever safety doesn't win the starting job between Snyder and Taylor and take out one or even two of the LBs. I'm not sure if all those guys will be ready this year. So playing those cover guys in space only makes sense and they can't be as bad at defending the run as a team as they were last year.....

I pick door 3--Hell freezes over

I'd go with #3 too...but forced to choose, I'd say the D will go rogue. We already saw a taste of that with the special blitz package (what did they call that?) with 8 guys standing up at the line and flooding the backfield.

I can't see Kirk opening up the O. And worse than that, i can't see Davis going vertical even if he got the green light.

I think we ran more vertical routes last year than at any time during the GD era. The problem was our QB wouldn't throw it unless someone was 10 yards clear, or if 2.5 seconds went by then he dumped it off, or he just flat out missed people running wide open.

We all know CJ won't be shy with the vertical ball, if he feels he's got a shot...he'll let it go and let his guy make a play.

Cut and save this....

Believe it or not, I think we WILL see a slightly new Dirk, because he is smart enough to realize that giving the impression that he may actually be changing his 1940's philosophy's...even slightly...may be enough to save him should the season end up disastrous. For all his faults...and the list is very long...he has to know at this point that if he has a disastrous season AND does it whilst coaching continually like he is nursing a 3 point lead in the National Championship Game...he is most likely gone. Do not kid yourself...he wants that extra 25% in his pocket through 2020.

I just don't see Kirk changing his offensive strategy this late in his tenure. Unless Brian or someone can plead their case of the game passing him by with this close to the vest play calling and leave it up to the defense to win the games I think that we'll see the same old stuff once again. And that's with CJ occasionally lighting it up on offense.

With the amount of fan apathy and negative media attention about the stale nature of the program, I could see them opening up the offense more this year. Especially with CJ as quarterback. We haven't really had a guy who had the ability to throw the ball down the field in years, nor have we had a guy willing to take a risk since Stanzi. I could see this offense putting up some serious points this year...and also giving up a lot of turnovers.

Rule #1 of being a Hawkeye fan since KF got here, never fall for the whole "opening up the offense" talk during each preseason.

Iowa being more aggressive on offense. The defense has been more aggressive ever since Phil Parker took over. The problem has been that the fundamentals have gone to the crapper. Tackling is inconsistent, especially by the back 7, guys seem to be out of position particularly at big moments in games.

For once in a looong time i am in agreement with you. Not sure if you are trolling or you are serious, either way I agree 100% with everything you said. I think they will push the football down the field......Boone Myer has to hold up at LT, by October at minimum he has to be serviceable.

That's just it. I feel like I'm watching an episode of Charlie Brown and just waiting for Lucy to pull the ball..

I normally would agree with this 100%....but Dirk has yet to feel the pressure to show that he actually has a pulse like he will feel this year. But then again, when has he ever cared what anyone thought? It seems to keep working out for him...he's allowed to return every god awful season. So screw me, now I'm just talking out of a***....I have no clue what will happen. ***Sigh***

<<....I have no clue what will happen>>

I would say that's the theme for the 2015 season...but we'll know by mid-November

I think they blitz more. Out of necessity. Hopefully that doesn't last too long. Meaning the DT's have developed. They have a secondary they can trust. They have a very questionable d line. LB should be improved.

Again, I think all the pieces are mostly in place except for the lines. We're supposed to be able to develop lines.

This is probably the purest test of position coaching, given what Iowa is, we're going to be able to see for a long time.

It's almost parallel on offense. I'm not saying we're all world at either wr or rb, but the staff has players at both positions. O line is the question, and o line is where they are supposed to be able to turn carbon into diamonds.

I expect eight wins. Maybe I demand eight wins. I would think this year sets up the the staff's strength of being able to develop line players. If they don't, or can't for whatever reason, it's going to be another painful year of watching football no matter what the win total.

Good post. 7 wins is typically the minimum I will accept as an "average/acceptable" year, but I would agree that this year and last, given the seemingly easier schedule, should result in 8+ wins. Last year's results, including an embarrassment in the bowl game, have not been acceptable.

I keep thinking about last year. even had we lost the Ball State game, which would have been awful, 9 wins absolutely should have happened. Absolutely gave away the MD and Nebby games, both of those games, along with an awful isu game, I lay at the feet of the coaching staff, game management, and illogical game plans....

1) isu was just stupid offensive playcalling.
2) MD...for some reason we decided to go away completely what was working on offense. No adjustments at all
3) Nebby, God help me...the unholy combination of KF going into conservative mode, decision to punt not once, but twice to one of the few guys that could really hurt us, and of course playing prevent.

Ugh, season can't start soon enough.
