Which is more likely to happen?

Walker said....."Ugh, season can't start soon enough."

Um, you sure about that?
;)

Yes. At least the speculation and conjecture can be over...well, at least until 2016 season.

Can't help it, still excited for a new season, even with the doubt and uncertainty.

Golfer and Walker, good, solid posts.

I would add an additional caveat, now called The 2012 OL Factor: injury.

Most years, we can slog through an injury, whether with patchwork-born-of-experience or good old-fashioned depth. But a year like 2012, where the OL is devastated by injuries, and there isn't appreciable experience? Not so much. And I fear that is what we have this year (lack of depth AND experience). Hope I'm wrong.

I think we ran more vertical routes last year than at any time during the GD era. The problem was our QB wouldn't throw it unless someone was 10 yards clear, or if 2.5 seconds went by then he dumped it off, or he just flat out missed people running wide open.

We all know CJ won't be shy with the vertical ball, if he feels he's got a shot...he'll let it go and let his guy make a play.

Agree.

Hopefully CJ has the same "attitude" he's had in the past when it comes to throwing downfield and being in attack mode (even with a big lead). Because he really is in about as good a position as a QB can be. Sure, Kirk or Davis might try to rein him in and be more conservative...but what are they going to do if he doesn't comply? Bench him? For who?

CJ just needs to be CJ.

That the offense for Iowa is more aggressive with their play calling on early downs and just plain overall?

Or that the defensive strategy will be more aggressive with blitzing and not just running the same 4-3 cover 2 over and over regardless of the down and distance or personal the other team has out there?

I wish wish wish it'd be the offense. But I don't see that happening much even with CJ as the QB. I think they'll make a huge effort to get the running game going and will be as predictable as ever about it. Don't get me wrong they'll take shots. After turnovers or after they get the defense on their heels. But I think that 3 yard hitches and out patterns to the TEs and WRs will be the norm.

As far as defense goes I think they showed that they will mix up their packages some last year and not just on 3rd down. I think I'd like to see either the combo of an extra DB out there more. Be it Fleming or which ever safety doesn't win the starting job between Snyder and Taylor and take out one or even two of the LBs. I'm not sure if all those guys will be ready this year. So playing those cover guys in space only makes sense and they can't be as bad at defending the run as a team as they were last year.....

This whole post just sets it up on a tee for the Kirk haters.

This year will be no different from the last, and the year before that. And if you think we can just throw bombs every series think again. We only have one receiver that can really go deep, any type of D at all can adapt to that. Next...

Talk about hyperbole..... Your not wrong about them only having one 'proven' deep threat anyway. However they have like 5 freshman between those that redshirted and true ones we know little about that will be given a shot.

I started this knowing full well how most would agree the answer is 'C' I was just curious about the way the fans would be leaning.

As for going deep, the OL is going to have to be able to give CJB some time to throw. Can this year's line protect him well enough, to give enough time for the deep routes to develop?

But an aggressive offense under KF? That'll be the day. Maybe even less so if the OL struggles. KF may want to keep passes shorter to protect CJB. I'm no expert, but that's my two bits.

If anything, it will be the defense that will go all out IMO.

I think we overstate Iowa's conservative nature. We saw them open it up many times, its just that they don't execute very well consistently.

Against Wisconsin, they finally opened it up. Against Maryland (LOL) ok, well you know what I mean.

I'll notice flourishes of aggressive play calling but you always know they are going to revert back to the same old zone. Funny, when you execute in the running game, you look smashmouth, when you don't it looks pathetic.

Under Phil, we've seen a much more aggressive defense than under norm. No question about it.
