Where the tourney gets it wrong...

The more I see Hawkforce post, the more I realize he is just trolling.

The NCAA tourney gets it right each year.

Expansion talk seems a bit much. I don't get the expand to 96. I think its a bit much but a little expansion and re-formatting probably helps reward the higher seeds.

I'd say bump it up to 80 and have a last 20 in or whatever square off on tues/wed(like they do already). Have all those play in teams then travel to face the top 4-5 seeds in all 4 regions. It would include all those argumentive bubble teams that get talked about each march, and being a top 4 seed gives you a solid advantage as you face a weaker team who just played 2 days ago and didn't have a full 4-5 days to scout you.

I think that would be a better tourney, all the while giving the highest seeds a bit of an advantage.

I'd still be down with expanding it to include every team (if it's to be expanded that is)

Expanding to include everyone is the dumbest thing ive ever heard....why even have a regular season?

One serious knock on the tourney in my mind, is why does a conference tourney winner become an automatic qualifier? You get a team like Western Kentucky this year who went 15-18!!! That is a flaw in the system that needs to be addressed. They bumped some team that had a much more legit claim to a spot.. The conference tournaments, which for the most part entail 4 games that weigh more than a 30 game season.... not right.

There is a reason they don't play for 3rd 5th 7th etc... They play for number 1...that's it. that is all the tournament is designed to do. the lower seeds are there to flush out the pretenders. if you cannot beat the lower seeds, you are not number 1. making it to the sweet 16 doesn't mean you're a top 16 team. same with elite 8 and final 4. the only number that is relevant is #1. Norfolk St isn't better than Missouri. but Missouri is also not the number 1 team in the nation. the tournament did its job.

All I'm saying is that would weaken what is already one of the weakest regular seasons in sports.

Why don't we just stop inviting mid-majors? Seems like THEIR regular season is of little concern to you. It's such a travesty that a team that won 25+ games beating a Michigan, but a 26-win SDSU team getting knocked off by 11-seeded NC State is just fine. After all, NC State is probably the better team when all is said and done.

Seriously, you're an idiot and a troll.

Hawkforce...

The problem you're having is that your premise is wrong from the start.

The NCAA is not trying to find the best team in the nation. It's trying
to find a tournament winner. Subtle but important distinction.

It employs the tournament format in order to achieve it's true goal... to
make as much money as possible from the event. The format is exciting
precisely because it is unpredictable. Purists may be more inclined toward
a best of 7 between whichever teams they believe are the best but the
HUGE numbers of fans who watch in hopes of seeing David knock off Goliath
would be lost.

This is entertainment, pure and simple. The more widely appealing the
show, the more revenue to the principals. So, if you're hung up on looking
for the best team (subjective from the start) then you will save yourself
a ton of frustration by just watching something else.

Some of us "oldtimers" can remember when the NIT tourney was a much more prestigious tourney than the NCAA tourney. The NIT was a true invitational only tourney, and only the best of the best got in. But then the NCAA said hey wait a minute, when need to get our slice of the pie, and the rest is history.

I say since we are in the NIT, we just declare it.the most prestigous tourney this year, deal? :)

Are you referring to Butler & UConn in last year's final?

I have disagree on this one. Very, very ugly. 53-41

UConn took a 10 point lead with about 11 mintues left in the game and the closest Butler got after that was 8 or 9.

That game represented everything that is wrong with today's college basketball.

Last year's NCAA Tournament title game was a bad game, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with college basketball, because I have also seen some real stinkers in the BCS title game as well. Same goes for the Super Bowl, and the World Series. Not every game is going to be a classic.

The NCAA Tournament is still the greatest sporting event I can think of, and it's all decided on the court. Sometimes the best team doesn't always win, and in my mind, that's the beauty of it.

The NCAA tourney is too big...Mizzou is one of the best teams in the nation and they don't get a shot to really play for a national title...we know Norfolk is NOT better than Mizzou...yet one bad game and the season is worthless.

Uh...it's Mizzou who got it "wrong"...

One bad game, and that's everything that is wrong with today's college basketball? How about the Duke-Butler title game? That was one of the best college basketball games I've ever seen. Watching George Mason and VCU's runs to the Final Four is what's great about college basketball. The idea that you don't have to BE one of the big boys in order to BEAT them is as American as it gets.
