Where is the Pass Rush?

My uneducated opinion is the DL doesn't appear to have any technique, just a bull rush from everyone.

On the flip side I'm kind of concerned how much pressure three non rate teams have made our O-line look soft. Are we saving the good stuff for something?

When I hear coaching at Iowa saying this is the "best defensive front" we have ever had...I get a bit concerned.
We've had great defensive fronts... and this is not one of them. I have no idea what they were seeing when they said that but I would argue this is one of our worst.

Look at 2010. Clayborn, Klug, Ballard, Binns, and Mike Daniels. 3 of those guys are still in the league and Ballard probably could be if he didn't give it up.

Iowa system is to focus on staying in their lanes and push back to contain the QB. And then they blitz in key situations. Bend don't break. As AJ gets better we may see more penetration and more pocket breakdowns. Should be a good tandem. Hesse and AJ

Jaleel Johnson is with the Vikings. That should not be overlooked.
I'd have to go back and watch the games again but I think the interior has been at least okay. I was certainly hoping to see more out of Lattimore than we have to date but he's still a young player.

With that said I think it is the edge rush that is most concerning. Outside of AJE there just isn't the type of athleticism at the position that you need, and I think in general that has been a recruiting failure over the recent years.

Going forward I think AJE needs to be in there on all passing situations, and rotate Hesse to the inside. I think that gives us are best shot. Hopefully others can step up.

You can't beat an elite offense without a consistent ability to pressure the QB. Period. I was just at the grocery store and I saw Anthony Nelson on a milk carton. Hesse and Epenesa are the only one's getting pressure, and it's not enough. If you give McSorely this kind of time...they will score 50 next week.

I'm really hoping we have some third down packages we have been saving...and holding back. You can't stop good/great teams if you let their QB stand back there all day...just saying.

4 man rush and maintain the gaps. Believe Matt Roth and Jaleel Johnson have spoke about this. That's the scheme. If those 4 guys can get there that is great, but otherwise counting on coverage to hold. It is maddening at times for sure.

This.

And I've seen more wiggles this year than I remember. And just as much blitzing. Jewell has "blitzed" a handful of times depending on what the RB does, if he has the RB, or if he is spying the QB and has s lane to him. The D just looks a little different to me.

The majority of QB's can pick a defense apart when they have a solid 4 seconds to scan the field so it's obviously important to get pressure. McSorely has the Russell Wilson/Johnny Manziel quality of eluding a free rusher and making something big happen with improvisation. McSorely is only 6' tall so being mobile and improvising allows him to see the field more clearly than just sitting in the pocket. Pressuring McSorely is obviously going to be important, but keeping him contained to the pocket will be just as important.

Except Phil Parker made that statement stating since he has been DC. 2010 was still Norm Parker as DC.

I wonder if Parker was drunk when he said this was the best dline he's seen in his time here? They are far from good, when we've played 3 subpar teams and had these results. The big 10 teams will own this front 4 imo

They've underwhelmed so far. I was hoping Anthony Nelson would have made more of an impact. But the lack of a pass rush is noticeable. On 3rd downs I think they've done better but I want to see more rush on the 1st and 2nd down passes too. Seems like these guys are just a little too gap control aware (I understand the why that is) and because of that it makes them easier to pass block. I want to see the DEs get on the upfield shoulder of their blocker and get around them. Hesse should be faster than every blocker he's up against. The Nelsons and AJ have to use their hands better. So far AJ bull rushing is our best weapon and he's only getting to do that 10 times a game or so... Not cutting it as a team at all .
