Where is the Pass Rush?

You can't beat an elite offense without a consistent ability to pressure the QB. Period. I was just at the grocery store and I saw Anthony Nelson on a milk carton. Hesse and Epenesa are the only one's getting pressure, and it's not enough. If you give McSorely this kind of time...they will score 50 next week.

I'm really hoping we have some third down packages we have been saving...and holding back. You can't stop good/great teams if you let their QB stand back there all day...just saying.

Our pass rush is on the sideline for 80% of the snaps.

I would have liked to see a lot more pressure, blitz against NT and ISU. More specifically, trying different kinds of pressure.

That said, it'll need to be "contain" pressure for Mcsorly. If you don't get home on a blitz on him, it's trouble. Then again, I just don't think "bend don't break" will work, they just have too many weapons....namely Barkley.

This is the best offense we will face all year, I think by a fairly wide margin. Pick your poison.... Mcsorley...Barkley...TE.

My very unexpert opinion....go man to man on WR, sell out on Barkley, everything goes through him and he destroyed us last year. Make Mcsorley beat ya.

I think we will see some Nickel/Raider.

Ultimately, i think we have to put 35+ up. Gotta hit the deep shots...

Akrum and Josey more healthy would be nice.

Well, I think the move to Hooker is a step in the right direction. Our safety play has been abysmal over the last two weeks. Gervase would still be playing if he tackled...but he whiffed way to many times.

Penn State is so hard to defend...they scheme you to get the match ups they want, then let their playmakers do what they do. I agree...we have to play man on the outside, and try to take away Barkley and the TE. Force deep throws and hope they are off and we defend well.

I get the "keep mobile QBs in the pocket and take away their running ability...but letting them sit back there an pick us apart isn't good either. I'm not sure I saw a blitz yesterday. Once again, I'm hoping ole Phil is holding back. You need to be creative defensively to beat Penn State and get them off the field.

I think it's fair to say that this has been a general recruiting failure over the last few years outside of now AJE.

The guys we have got at DE are usually bigger guys with really good technique. They are more geared as runs stoppers. The problem is on passing situations they do not have the athleticism to generate the quick pressure, and on top of that when they get in there they have a tough time tackling athletic quarterbacks. It's very frustrating to watch and there is no way you can expect a secondary to hold up that long.

That's why most people are calling for more AJE. He's our best option to generate quick pressure and actually has the athleticism to get the QB to the ground.

Watch #90 for Iowa. The guy just gets absorbed and never hold contain. maybe now, after 3 games, they'll settle on 5 or 6 guys and just play them. The other 2 or 3 guys will sit.

We had a Bower lone Lbkr blitz and a bower-jewell crossing blitz yesterday both in the second half. The first one was ineffective as Bower had too far to run and the other did get good pressure right at the face and feet of the qb.

Could the nelsons be too tall to get under leverage on their blockers, not sure. Some great pass rushers just have the speed, feet and hands to get their blocker off balance and blow by them. I dont think either nelson has the speed or strength yet. AJE totally can bull rush as a freshman,

Start AJ and Hesse at the DEnds if you can.

Try some nickle and Dime and have a fast blitzer up the middle as even NFL analysts have said NFL qbs hate that double A gap blitz or any blitz right up in their face.

Is it Doyles fault? Our d-lineman look like they have no strength or speed. A. Nelson was in the back field all the time, where has he been this year?

This is the most disappointing thing to me so far. I really thought we would be able to get a lot of pressure with Nelson, Hesse, and Epenesa.

Nothing new here. No blitzing for 20 years, even to just keep the offense honest. My biggest complaint about our schemes. Any spread offense will pick us apart. PSU is gonna tear us apart.

Guarantee you that you will see a totally different defensive philosophy moving forward. Part of that is the type of offenses we will see in the B1G. We will see the "raider package" too.

When I hear coaching at Iowa saying this is the "best defensive front" we have ever had...I get a bit concerned.

Need to take some risk, most often, to score an upset against a superior opponent.

Creative Kirk? Perhaps there are tricks in the basket waiting to be put into play.

Iowa has a chance, IMHO, and that suits me well...we will see.

I think Iowa has lots of payback energy in this one...that can work in our favor as well.
