You're saying this is the protocol that was followed when they hired the new Offensive Coordinator?
Obviously not. There was an assistant being groomed for the position. Greg retired, they felt he was ready. People can cry all they want. He's qualified. If it doesn't work, both Father and son will be gone in a few seasons. If it works, Brian could be here for a very long time. I'm hoping it works. I want Iowa to be successful.

I think part of wanting Iowa to be successful, is wanting a HC to hire the best available assistants one can find. Just like wanting the top prepstars, is wanting Iowa to be successful.
If KF is going to be our coach (which we know he is not going anywhere) then I believe Brian is the best assistant for the OC job. Just my opinion.

Waiting too long cost Iowa a shot at Bobby Stoops.

Waiting is not good in coaching searches.

And once again... the protocol for PROMOTING is not the same as for HIRING, as was already discussed previously in this same thread. So no, nobody is saying that this was the protocol followed when they hired the new OC because we did not HIRE a new OC.

EDIT: Furthermore, logically, nobody is ever "qualified" for a position they are promoted to if your definition of qualified requires them to have experience in the position.

LOL, you think a guy who is playing ball in the CFL wants to become a grad assistant?
He's on his last legs as a player. I'd venture a guess this last yr was his last up there. He was a backup and didn't play a ton. He's mentioned interest in getting into coaching in the past. Timing seems to be pretty good for him to if both sides are down for it...

If true, I like the pickup. Minnesota's run game was pretty strong under him, and while they didn't dominate games, KJ Maye and Drew Wolitarsky were pretty solid receivers that developed under him.

Jerry Kill was recently hired to be Rutgers' offensive coordinator.

Good Lord, PLEASE read. Please.

He mentioned on the last Hawkeye Huddlecast that he was signed to play next season. I have no idea what his salary is and the CFL does not publish salaries, but the average is about $90,000. Being a veteran I gotta believe he is above that. I don't think he would take a $23,000/yr grad assistant gig.

Then again, David Raih left a six figure salary to work as an unpaid intern in order to get into coaching.

Now playing football is a different animal because you can only do it for so long, which means years you give up can never be recovered. However, it also comes with some pretty real risks to long-term health. If coaching is what he really wanted to do long term, it would not be a ridiculous decision to take a GA now.

Well that said making 100k or so to carry a clipboard ain't a bad gig so if he were to decide to keep doing that while he can who could blame him? I just thought he'd talked about having interest in getting into coaching some day. Figured he was getting close to being done playing. I sure as heck wouldn't quit playing if I couldn't get the foot in the door job I wanted.

What qualifications does that clown have to call playes? He hasn't be an OC since Brian was chasing butterflies in daddy's backyard.
He drew up a few trick plays and onside kicks to beat Iowa when he was calling the shots. He punked Kirk that day

Yeah, but to be fair in your assessment, it's prudent to remember every good team punked Kirk that year. Wisky fake punt, NW-late game heroics, OSU - late game heroics.
