Make your prediction. The kid has just too much game to keep him on the bench at the start. Yeah, I know total minutes is more important than starting, and is especially important who is out there at the end of a close game. I think Uthoff has a great skill set and was a great pickup for this team

Might as well make it a poll.

The only one I could see him replace in the starting line up is Basabe. Which wouldn't be a bad thing at all. From what we've seen over the years Basabe does best when he comes off the bench.

3-4-5 really should be Uthoff, White and Olaseni. Gabe doesn't need to be a scorer in that lineup and can focus on rebounding and defense, and getting fast break trash cleanup points.

The lineup I liked best was: Gesell, Marble, Uthoff, White, Woodbury

Real intelligent group that moved the ball well.

i think White just plays better at the 4 and is more consistent there. Uthoff is a nightmare for opposing teams. Gesell just has to be smart and not turn the ball over and that group could get it done.

It depends on the match ups and Fran knows what and when to use his arsenal of able-bodies. It will be a great year for BB, FINALLY!

The only reason he won't start this year is to keep Basabe's moral high. He is at worst the 3rd best player on the team.

Throw in Marble & Gesell and that is our best lineup.... Basabe off the bench has proven to not be a bad thing. Kind of good really. He was more productive off the bench. The same may hold true for Woodbury?

This is the lineup I like, too, although I also think the staff has to look at each opponent to see who is the best matchup at the 5; could be Gabe, could be Woody. I like Gabe's strength, athleticism, rebounding, shot-blocking. Woody is better at flashing to the perimeter defensively to try to disrupt the dribble or ball movement, although that's also where he seems to pick up a foul or two each game.

Are we in agreement that the starter's job at the 3 is between Basabe and Uthoff? Play and skill wise, I think Jarrod has the clear edge. But Fran may have to balance that with keeping Mel's head in the game and getting him to finish his senior year strong. Iowa is going to need Mel to log significant minutes in each game the rest of the way. Could be we see Mel start but Jarrod the first one off the bench and getting more minutes each game.

now, i'm not an x's and o's guy on b-ball, but it looks like Mel only plays the 4 or 5 spot when in, and White switches to more of that small forward position. and honestly i don't think that is the best spot for him. Uthoff is much better at ball handling and has a better outside shot than White.

and i agree with the bold part. Uthoff is a great shooter and FT shooter. he will definitely be in at the end of close games.

I think it will be before conference. He makes the team much harder to defend so he will get more and more minutes whether he starts or not. Best lineup is definitely gesell at pg, marble at sg, uthoff at sf, white at pf, and Woodbury at c. Matchup nightmare and 3 ball handlers on the floor and those three can also shoot the 3. Not to mention the rebounding ability and ability to get to the rim of this group...therefore they will draw lots of fouls too. Plus I believe basabe played his best ball off the bench last year so it puts him back as the 6th man and allows white to play more time at his natural spot.

If you held a gun to my head, I'd say Marble is Iowa's best player, followed by White, then Uhtoff, mostly because the first two guys have done it against better competition. I think those three are Iowa's best player.

I also think it's a good thing to have firepower off the bench. He will get his minutes, even if he isn't announced at the beginning of the game.

With Mike healthy, I like him at PG. Then Dev @ 2, Uthoff @ 3, Whitey @ 4, @ 5 I like Gabe. This is so hard.
The combo of Mike, Dev, White, Mel, & Woody is stronger defensively. I have a feeling that Fran will continue to rotate starters throughout the season and play the matchups. That's the strength of this team. Why not play to it?
