Some have said to move White to the 4....we've seen that and that isn't exactly pretty. White and Uthoff are perfect at the 3 spot.

Maybe I am wrong but I thought Iowa looked worse with White at the 3 last year. Didnt he start the year at the 3 last year? Then Clemmons was inserted into the lineup for Basabe which moved White to the 4 right around the ISU game or a little after.

i would have agreed with your assessment until I watched a re-run of the second half of the Penn game. Penn's center was continually out positioning Woody under their offensive basket. I know that their guy appeared to be much bigger but that also meant that Woody should have been more mobile and quicker. Yet he was out of position many times which allowed easy baskets for the Penn center. So when Olaseni came in I particularly paid close attention to this match up. The defense against the Penn center was significantly improved as Olaseni kept between the basket and the Penn center and did a great job of muscling the Penn center out away from the basket.

If you have the game recorded go back and pay close attention to this matchup in the paint. Again, I felt the same way that you did until reviewing the second half. Now I will be fair and say that this is just one half of one game that was a lopsided win, and we will have to see what transpires in upcoming games. I was not very impressed with the general play of the second half over all with the exception of the effort put out by Uthoff, Olaseni, and Jok. Not just scoring but overall effort. When Uthoff came in it helped get some of the focus back on the court.

Yep, I'm far from a Woodbury basher and he usually does a very solid job on defense, but he played very poorly in the second half on Friday. He let the Penn center get deep position way too easily. I still think he should be starting over Gabe though, Gabe is a great energy player to bring off the bench.

As for the topic of the thread, I like Uthoff coming off the bench. We'll get a better feel for how Fran handles his rotations after the next week but even as a sixth man I would expect Uthoff to trail only Marble and White in minutes.

I thought Woody, Gabe and Basabe all played poor against Penns big guy. That being said Woody and Basabe did better than Gabe. Gabe maybe boxed him out once. Let him score at will on him. Lazy over the back fouls.

If you think Gabe did good against him then you dont understand the game at all. Gabe was out of position the whole game. Go back and see how hot Fran was at Gabe. The only reason he is playing right now is to try to get him to understand. His minutes will go down a lot from now on. He cant handle these cupcake teams he isnt going to be seeing a lot of minutes.

I don't know how others will take this but...the best basketball talent on the Iowa roster is Jarrod Uthoff. He has a skill set that is different than everyone else and his complete game makes him someone that needs to be on the court as much as possible. Him in the lineup gives us the ability to move white back to the 4 where he is better suited. Uthoff is really our only true 3. I expect him to be top 3 or 4 in minutes and I know starting isn't as important as finishing (in close games) but he will show that he deserves to start. He will be fine off the bench or starting but everything just seems to make more sense with him in the lineup so why not start that way.

1 - gesell, clemmons
2 - marble, jok and ogles when he is healthy
3 - Uthoff, with a combo of white, McCabe, marble, jok as backups
4 - white, basabe with some McCabe and uthoff
5 - Woodbury, olaseni with a little basabe here as well (basabe, white, Uthoff on the floor together would be matchup nightmare at times)

basabe be seemed like he found himself as the 6th man last year and he could dominate the second team and allow white to play where he is more natural. It all seems to fit better this way. But I trust Fran...I mean he was smart enough to figure out gesell should be back at the point.

I still struggle with folks that think Olaseni should start over Woodbury, I seriously do not get it.

They see blocks and dunks but don't understand whats else is going on away from the ball on the defensive end.

Woodbury is the best defensive player on the team because he has a tremendous grasp of where everyone needs to be. Hes the leader of the team on that side of the ball.

Gabe tries to block everything which is ok but if you don't get it your out of position. Woodbury recognizes where the opponent is trying to go much earlier and cuts it off before they get to the bucket which is much more important.

i think Uthoff is a better overall shooter than Marble already. if he can consistently create his own shot, then he might just become our go-to guy in the clutch, considering his great FT shooting and mismatch opportunities as well.

I think he can already get a shot when ever he wants but he doesn't seem to want to force much the way Marble and White will.

Theres no 3 in the league he can't shoot over, his 3 is pretty good, his pull up is excellent and if you close out hard he can go by and get to the rim in only a few dribbles and he is also an excellent passer.

Hes Iowas best player right now IMO but I doubt he takes over that role offensively yet.

I dont think you can bench Basabe or White even though they are both 4s because they haven't done anything to deserve to lose their spot but the more time Uthoff spends at the 3 the better Iowa will be.

Most college teams only play 8 and keep the rest on the bench and thats how Fran had always done it too until last year.

I think hes dealing with trying to keep everyone engaged, seniority issues and such, more so than putting the best five out there right now.

Gabe also creates instant offense and can run the floor well. His blocked shots have led to several fast break points

Fran prefers to play 10+ deep....When JO comes back the bench will get even deeper. Fran has said many times he likes to keep the players with the hot hand out there so any member on the team can be the leading scorer on a given night

Fran didn't go 10 deep with any of his teams until this year. I agree he will go with the hot hand but even he has said he has never had a team this deep. The rotation will be something that he and the team will have to get used to. I would love to see no one at 30 min but I have a feeling in the meat of the schedule we will see more of an 8 or 9 man rotation with marble, Uthoff, and white all around 30+ min.

Like I said, Fran "prefers" to go 10+ deep. Now that he has a roster that is deeper he is able to run and gun more. It will be nice to see the system progress to the point where 100 points on the scoreboard won't take 2-3 games like in the lick days.

How can you "prefer" something you have never done before...that is just wrong. He might like to have that depth but preferring it means you know the positives and negatives of each because you have done each. He has never gone 10 deep. He has even said that.

Maybe Fran prefers to go 10 deep with this squad.... to placate players? He doesn't think going 10 deep, now, hurts Iowa's chances of winning.

Have you ever heard Fran talk about his previous schools. He wants to run the up paced tempo and keep fresh bodies in the game. 10+ is ideal to do so. he has never gone 10 deep at Iowa because they didn't have enough talent

He leaves early and doesnt box out. He is no where near instant offense. He gives up more points on defense than he scores.

Instant offense for the team, IE blocked shots lead to fast break opportunities. I am not saying Gabe is polished offensively at this time.

Fran never went 10 deep at his other schools either. He wants to play up tempo but you don't need to be 10 deep to do it. Roy Williams typically is 7 or 8 deep and he always is up tempo. 10 guys just means less wear on them throughout the year.

In that case you could say the whole team is instant offense as everyone runs the floor well on this team. Blocked shots lead to fast breaks as much as boxing out getting the rb and having a good outlet pass.

Uthoff is the best shot blocker on the team. Basabe and Uthoff have the most upside blocking shots as they dont get out of position to do it. Right now Gabe is not helping the team by blocking shots because more often he slides over to block a shot and forgets about his man leading to an easy bucket.

Gabe gives 110%. He is busting his butt. His head has not caught up to his body. He lacks so much game time compared to the average college player. I dont want anyone to think I have anything against Gabe he just isnt anywhere near Woody, Basabe, and Uthoff(which is who I would be using down low).

I wish Iowa would have gotten David Kravish and not Gabe, not dissing Gabe on this one either.

Sucks Kravish decided to go to Cal.
