When will McCaffery take the NEXT step in recruiting?

Let me start off by saying that I love McCaffery's recruiting efforts so far. The top 25 ranked class, outstanding. But in my opinion, and I'm interested in hearing you guys' opinions, I believe now that McCaffery has signed top 100 recruits and locked down the borders of the state of Iowa, that the next step becomes to go into the back yard of big name program and sign a top 100 recruit from outside the state. Maybe the Chicago area or go into Indiana or New York or North Carolina and snag a top 100 recruit. What do you guys think? Will Fran pull this off in 2014?

I would hope that he establishes himself in the Chicago area. It's close to home for those kids and there is so much talent.

Fran is already taking the next steps...he has a lot of offers out to Illinois kids, but I think he will also continue to focus of getting the best players in the state, if they deserve the look.

Look at how many top-150 targets he has in the 2014 class, if Iowa gets two of those and keeps Bonifas in-state, then that is the next step.

Realistically, he has taken the next step, if Jok gets to the level that he and his coach expect, in the last edition of top-150 for 2013 don't be surprised if he is right back there.

I think you will see Iowa a regular in the Top 25 rankings when they have multiple scholarships available. Honestly, people focus so much on Chicago, too much, there are a lot of places in Illinois that have been cranking out players that are closer to IC yet. I don't care where they get players if they are good.

I really just want to enjoy this season before i start worrying about recruiting 2 seasons from now. And actually I try not to worry about recruiting. FM has it all under control. I just sit back and enjoy the ride.

I too like Fran's recruiting so far, but you have to remember that most of the highly-rated prospects he has gotten so far have been local recuits: Woodbury (Sioux City), Jok (Des Moines) and Gesell (S. Sioux City - which is practically part of Sioux City, IA, my home town). Most of the other commits from out-of-state are ones he signed early before other offers came along (Meyer), or are more under-the-radar types that haven't gotten offers from top-flight programs.

To answer the OP though, I feel that if/when Iowa starts winning more, getting to the NCAA Tournament, is a ranked team, is on national TV more often, etc. that will give us a much better chance in out-of-state recruiting efforts. When you haven't yet established yourself as a Top 25 program or better, it's awfully hard to get a 4 or 5* player from another state, who grew up dreaming of playing for his in-state school. Particulary if that in-state school is Indiana, Illinois, OSU, MSU, etc.

I think with Illinois being a bit down and a new coach, now would be a good time for Fran to start making some hay in Illinois recruiting IMO.

Do you want to recruit players? Get a job application! I for sure will not complain about Fran's job and the assistant coaches. i think they are doing just fine. Take a shot of whiskey to calm yourself

We have just recruited a class that has one player each from Iowa, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan and Nebraska. One reasonably projected starting 5 for this season would include a player from Nebraska, Ohio, Michigan, New York and Iowa.

Since he has been with us, McC has recruited players from New York, California, Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska, Georgia, London, Indiana and Ohio.

Our current roster has players from seven states or countries. We're fine.

This is all true, however you are missing the OP's point. Of those out of staters, who was a highly regarded recruit? Nobody. I'm not saying I care about that, but odds are those higher rated recruits are going to pan out more than non-highly rated recruits.

I would love to see Fran go get a jabari Parker, Tyus Jones, or Anthony davis type of player out of state or in state. I think it will happen, but Fran has Iowa partially back to where every one wants them (the glory days of the 80s) and it will take time to get the type of recruits we all want Fran to get.

Don't get too cute with it. Francis did not recruit Dev out of Michigan...Lick did. He did not recruit Gabe out of London, he recruited him out of Kansas. And While Gessel is from Nebraska, he barnstormed with the Iowa AAU team.

I am interested to see if Francis can start turning top talent out of the Chicago area, something no Iowa coach has been able to do since the Pearl fiasco. We have gotten some good downstate kids like Acie Earl and Pierre Pierce, but only second rate talent out of Chicago like Cully Payne. That needs to change for long-term success.

Who recruited Clemmons out of Michigan? You're really ******* up on your basketball posts lately Ghost.

Don't play word games with me. Trust me, you'll lose. Anthony Clemmons is from Michigan. When I said we signed a player from Michigan, that's who I meant. When I discussed the starting five, I didn't say that Lick didn't recruit Marble, just we have a geographically diverse starting 5. It's not Fran vs. Todd anyway. It's us.

Whether you want to credit us with recruiting Gabe from London or Kansas, the point remains, you mathematically challenged dolt. Seven states or countries are represented on the current roster.

Gessell, Player of the Year in Nebraska, came very close to signing with the Cornhuskers. But we crossed the border (if only by a mile or two) and won that battle. That's exactly what you are demanding, but not giving our coaches the credit for.

You can't beat me with your B.S. Don't try.

Damn dude, U mad. I am not trying to BS anyone. In fact, the notion that I seriously believed Fran has been recruiting E Street Band saxophonist, the late Clarence Clemmons, should kind of be an indicator that you should not be so mad.

To Hawkfan33, yeah, I have been off lately, which is bad form for someone who behaves condescending as much as I do. I've had an inner-ear infection since Monday, and I'm starting to believe that having to **** my head to the right is starting to change the way I think.

No prob, brother. Go Hawks! And Clarence (RIP) was the original "Big Man". He could have helped any team!

Admittedly I haven't read anything other than the subject of this. My bad. That said, he has taken the next step. We haven't seen this since George Raveling. The next step is finding out that Michael Jordan has some eligibility left and he wants to be a Hawkeye.

Pierce was a chicagoland recruit....and finished 2nd in the Mr Basketball voting to Eddy Curry.

But, since then....nada.
I think Malek Harris would be a step in the right direction, but still want to pull a top player out of chicago...then we will know that Iowa has really gone to the next level,recruiting-wise. No logical reason why Iowa,if it becomes a strong program, cannot get kids only 3 hours away to come....Purdue does it..they have Kendall Stephens coming next year.
