I still remember the fumble we lost on their goal line. They ran it back for a touchdown. That lost us the game I think.

Technically, that wasn't a regular season game. Iowa got to play an extra game that year because there was an NCAA exemption for participants in the Kickoff Classic.

I was at the game. It was a lot of fun. Iowa beat the snout out of Tennessee, but lost the game, 23-22. The difference in the game was when Iowa had the ball on Tennessee's 2-yard line midway through the 2nd quarter. Iowa runs an option play right and as Hartielb pitches the ball to Bayless he is hit by a Tennessee player. A Vol linebacker picks the ball off in the air & goes the length of the field for 96-yard interception return. A 14-point swing.

This game also is one of the reason McGwire left Iowa. Dan McGwire was a superstar recruit coveted by every major-playing football school in the country. After signing McGwire, Hayden bragged that—"He's got the strongest throwing arm I've ever seen, pro or otherwise."

Dan McGwire started the game & was removed early in the second quarter. He wasn't very impressive. After the game McGwire was critical of Fry stating "I was just building up my confidence when he pulled me out."
