When Iowa plays Northwestern, who will be the

higher ranked team?

I think IOWA will be ranked higher than NW, on Saturday, October17.

(Northwestern plays at Anne Harbor, this weekend, for those in Rio Linda)

there are different possible scenarios

If Iowa loses to Illinois, there is no way Iowa will still be ranked

If NW beats Mich, it is certain NW will be ranked higher.than Iowa

If NW loses to Mich, NW will probably still be ranked, probably #23

If Iowa beats ILL, Iowa will move up just barely, maybe 1 or 2 spots to #21

so I guess its possible Iowa will be ranked higher than NW, but only if Iowa beats ILL and NW loses to Mich, and even then, it will only be a difference of a couple spots.

1. The only scenario where Iowa has a chance to be the higher ranked team is if Iowa easily handles Illinois and NW looses badly to Wolverines. If this is what happens Michigan will find itself knocking on the door to the top 10 and the Hawkeyes will move up max 5 places and the Kitties will drop to around 20.

2. A close loss by the Wildcats and a victory by the Hawkeyes remains the murky outcome but I think NW remains ranked over the Hawks as long as the Iowa victory isn't a blowout. If IA-IL is something like 42-7 there is a small chance in this scenario that the Hawks pass NW but I doubt it - We are talking Iowa here...

3. Any NW victory keeps them ahead of the Hawks even if Iowa stomps the Illini and NW bests Michigan in a "ugly" defensive struggle.

4. If the Hawkeyes fall to the Illini then say "bye bye top 25".

I just don't see #1 happening so I am going with my option #2 here and see the Hawks move up to 20 and the Wolverines and Kitties trade places.

I don't think there is one team on our schedule that is a guaranteed win. Illinois can score points. Hawks will need to bounce back offensively and continue stingy def.

Hoping for a nice game from CJ. 70% and 200+ yards. Get it rolling again.

Would be really nice if JC can stay under 20 carries in a win.

Start fast...something that will be key for the Hawks going forward and something they don't do often.

Rankings have become irrelevant! It is all about winning the Division. Getting to the Championship game & winning the game is far more important than any ranking. Ranking is the very last tie breaker in the event of a three way division tie.

Agree with the "let's deal with Illinois" first mantra. After that, you can ask me this question mid-afternoon Sunday - after the new polls come out.

Two great weekends of key games. Iowa-Illinois and Michigan-Northwestern this weekend, then Iowa-Northwestern and Michigan-Michigan State next weekend. The B1G will really start taking shape by then.

JUST TOO COMPLICATED.

WE NEED A SPREADSHEET.

Rudock had a great day against NW last year in Kinnick as did many Hawks, so hoping he will have another good day against them at Michigan and help his old team out in the race for the West. Have to take Michigan at home in that one. I would expect Iowa to win but nothing is a given in college football this year.

there should be only 1 out of 4 where Iowa ends up higher, 3 out of 4 Iowa is lower. if Iowa and NW both lose, Iowa is lower.

Odds are that Iowa wins and MIch wins this weekend. If that is the case we are probably ranked right next to each other more or less.

Whoever wins between Iowa and NW on October 17 will be rated higher. That's all that really matters.

Bump

And the answer is...

Iowa is ranked 17th in both polls, NW 20th in the AP and 21st in the coaches.

Iowa is also the favorite against Northwestern which means they will likely be favored in every remaining game.

Thanks Bit........
Just as I suspected, well kind of predicted.

Hawkeyes need to PAYBACK Northwestern for being Northwestern. Balls to the
walls this week, then a bye/rest week

Roger That. Looks like my scenario #1 played out. I was thinking more like my #2 was going to happen, should have showed more faith.

Surprised by the love Iowa is getting with a +5 jump. I think Illinois surprised a few people. A very good team that has a pretty tough schedule. Will be interesting to see if they make a bowl game. Looks like they should have a win against Purdue, maybe an upset in there w/ a takedown of NW or Wisconsin which would be most helpful for the Hawkeyes. I'll be rooting for the Illini from here on this season.

This is going to be a dog fight for Iowa. Northwestern has played us tough for years and I'm sure they had this game circled on their calendar.
