What would you rather...

Watch a Kirk Ferentz coached team or a Fran McCaffery coached team? Trust me I'm bored, so this popped into my head and it's somewhat of a ridiculous ask...but just for grins and giggles.

My money is on KF. It's pretty rare when you see an Iowa Football team get beat down or dominated. Wisconsin this year was kind of an anomaly. I'm not talking bowl games either. I'm talking B10 seasons. He's teams are prepared, play to the end of the whistle and effort is never an issue. Think about how we played the top teams in the conference...although the record shows 1-4, I don't think anyone believes we couldn't have won at MSU, NW, and then Penn State without the miracle at the end.

Fran, well, even in the good years, there are several games where we get taken to the woodshed. They have never been great defensively...let's be honest...although his defense tape was pretty sweet. I have so much more respect for Peter Jok than I ever did based on what I'm seeing this year. Turnovers are the frustrating piece to me. The football team and the basketball team are trained not to make them. Which team is the more disciplined team.

I know it's impossible to assess different sports, but there are underlying philosophies you can assess. I like the way KF's teams play.

When KF teams struggle it's not funny at all. FM teams when doing bad have an entertainment factor. My vote: FM

Yeah...well, I think B10 teams salivate wanting to play Iowa in basketball. Frans teams aren't tough, don't compete at the rim on defense and can almost never pressure the opposing backcourt. Rutgers was a perfect example...they were more physical, they were tougher, and they imposed their will.

When teams play Iowa in Football, they know who they played on Sunday morning. I like that.

I've seen both coaches make glaring mistakes. Both KF and FM teams tend to be under-athletic compared to other teams. But I don't remember any KF teams failing to hustle as much as I've seen FM teams. I'd rather watch a Kirk team than a Fran team at this point because at least you know you'll get 100% effort.

Kirk. I will always watch Iowa football start to finish, even when they're down. Iowa basketball, when it's bad, does not hold my attention for the whole game. Maybe it also has something to do with the number of games.

The most baffling thing about Fran's downturn, is before last season, we were known for playing efficient defense (as in, we gave them a higher number of possessions due to Fran's penchant for a fast paced offense, but made the most of them). I've never seen a team in any sport look as lost or disinterested as I have the Iowa MBB this year.

Everyone has a different definition of 'fun' and what entertains them. I can be entertained by a low scoring football game and the chess match and field position battle it can be. High scoring games can be entertaining for me as well. Frans teams (prior to this year) win lose or draw have been fun to watch and keep up with. He's always had kids worth rooting for too. Be it Gatens, Marble, White, Baer etc. There's something about this year's team that just isn't there. It's not just the defensive end as glaring as that is either. It's too bad cause it's a good group of kids.
