What we need

Oglesby will want that shot next year. His stats are skewed because him and Washpun are Wash's only options on offense. He is forced to take shots he shouldn't just to keep his team in the game at times. When he is just another guy on this team he will thrive knocking down shots, pressure or not. I'm excited to see him play the next 4 years. And those who say he is Gatens 2.0 clearly have never seen him play. He will be the best passer on the team next year hands down. He also can break down his man and get to the lane or get separation for a shot. Something Gatens and May cannot do if their life depended on it. He may not have the bulk that gatens did as a HS Sr. but he is all of 6'6" and is deceptively athletic. I think he'll be huge for us next year going forward.

I certainly hope you're right about that. His ability to break down his man I'll reserve judgement on. It's a little different breaking down a kid from Kennedy and breaking down a guy like Kalin Lucas.

Not disagreeing at all. But having that ability in high school will bode well for him to hone it in the big ten for 4 years.

As long as we keep playing this way, we need an assassin. Somebody who can hit that dagger. Gatens isn't the guy for that (how do you miss that wide open look?). I don't care if this mystery player is as one-dimensional as Bawinkel, if he can knock down the big shot from out there with consistency, we need him. I'm getting sick of watching the shot clang off the iron when it really counts. Get somebody who can shoot threes that has Cartwright's killer instinct.

I think Iowa has those guys on the roster right now. The problem is that they're freshman. I think Marble can be that guy, and I think Basabe can definitely be that guy. This team has a good nucleus, and if everyone comes back the future is bright, and I think sooner rather than later.

I was at the game today and it was a great to see all the Hawk fans show up...but like everyone else has said we need some shooters. I think we would have 2 to 3 more wins this year if only we had some shooters from long range that can hit consistently.

Iowa needs depth that can score some points, this would allow the starters more rest at times. Call it whatever you want, Iowa needs more players that can just score, doesn't have to be double figures, but if they had four guys that could come off the bench and provide some scoring, it would be huge. The defections/transfers have depleted depth, but look for Iowa to have depth next season bringing in four guys, if they can sign two more in the Spring.

I'll give you that. If Marble can improve his consistency from 3-point range, he could definitely be the go-to guy when down three (or going for the win when down 2). He's got the mentality to be that guy. Just have to wait and see if he can back up the confidence with results.

As much as I agree, I think defense has killed us more than lacking a clutch player. An underclassman on this team right now will develop into a clutch player (Marble or Basabe). Therefore I think we need guys who play athletic defense and can cover a zone, play good man to man, and box out with consistancy. I didnt get a chance to watch today due to having to work, however opponents mounting comebacks or draining 3's lights out on us gets old.

Agree. This team isn't going to turn the corner next season unless we land somebody who can take major minutes from Gatens. I am sick of the excuses....new system, injury, long recoveyr time, adjusting to new role, etc. He flat out is not a clutch shooter and has proven it throughout the season. Nice player yes, difference maker no and we need one in his spot on the floor. I am amazed they keep running sets for him late in games, as I have more confidence in Marble on a dribble drive and kick to Stoermer than to May or Gatens.

I say get as many players as you can to commit, even if it means making current players move on. These are desperate times, they call for desperate measures. While I would normally not advocate this kind of cut-throat attitude. It is what is needed know. I would say that no less than two current players that will be on next year's roster need to be gone.

that might be the stupidest thing I have ever read on a message board. How many guys you want to bring in? 10? so 10 new guys that have to learn the system, plays, defenses.. that have never played Big 10 basketball. That team would be brutal. not to mention how every coach would use that against us in recruiting.

We are two players away from being a bubble team/NIT team. a legit center (not a PF playing C) and i would like us to bring in a combo guard/slasher. What we are getting out of the 2/3 right now is not good.

I agree with your 2nd paragraph. I don't disagree with your first but I've seen much dumber posts on the boards and I've probably posted a few.
